U.S.A. and Germany By Noah Knepp Leader of the United States Our leader is known as our president Our current leader is Donald Trump Our leader is elected They have a four year term Qualifications required are: Born in the U.S.A., at least 35 years old, and lived in the U.S.A for at least 14 years. Leader of Germany © The title of their leader is chancellor and a president © Angela Merkel is the current chancellor of Germany and the current president is Joachim Gauck © The people elect a president while the Bundestag votes on the chancellor nominated by the president. © The chancellor has a 4 year term length with no term limit and the president has a 5 year term length with a two consecutive term limit © The president must be 40 years old and be entitled to vote in bundestag elections, they must also not be a part of the federal government or of a legislature. Must be a German citizen. Lawmaking Body: U.S.A. The lawmaking body of the U.S.A. is congress It is a bicameral structure with the senate and the house of representatives e 535 people total in congress, 435 in the house and 100 in the senate } : The House of he Senate ff Representatives Lawmaking Body: Germany e The lawmaking body in germany is called parliament. It is split up between the upper house or Bundesrat and the lower house or bundestag. It is a bicameral structure The Bundestag has 672 members and the Bundesrat has 69 members U.S.A. Rights e We have the freedoms of speech and press, the freedom of religion and the right to bear arms FREEDOM CLUB Germany Rights e They have certain restrictions to freedom of press and speech regarding the holocaust and related events o groups e There are also concerns regarding free expression of 1 religion FREEDOM e They have a very strict gun control and restricts many parts of owning and acquiring firearms Political Parties: U.S.A. e We have a two-party system e Democrats are a major party with their symbo a donkey, some key beliefs are pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-immigration , and anti-death penalty e Republicans are the other major party and their symbol is an elephant and some of their key beliefs are anti-abortion, anti-gun control, and pro-death penalty Political Parties: Germany e Germany has a multi-party system e One of the major parties is the Social Democratic Republic of Germany with key points being social democracy with social interventions to promote social justice much like the American Democratic Party e The Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union being sister parties combined is the other major party. They are considered conservative but have some liberal stances, anti terrorism and supports stronger punishments Political parties Germany cont. e The FDP (Free Democratic Party) is another major party which is liberal and believes in civil liberties, human rights, and internationalism e The Green Party is another major party and believes in alternative energy, sustainable development, and a qreen transport policy » CDU Devine, Elections and Voting U.S.A. e Voting age is 18 and you must be a citizen of the U.S. and must be registered to vote e Presidential elections are held every 4 years but there are elections every 2 years for members of the house e First there are primaries in the different parties, then after Elections and Voting Germany e The Voting age is 18 and must be an EU citizens resident for at least 3 months in Germany e They vote every 5 years for president and federal elections are held about every 4 years e Two votes are cast in the federal election one for a candidate and one for a political party. These are general elections and the political parties have primaries Taxes and Government Finance U.S.A. The U.S. charges an income tax, most of the money the government makes is through tax, whether it be income tax or payroll taxes or any other form of taxes. Spending in 2015: Military- $598. 5 billion Education-$70 billion Healthcare-$66 billion Taxes and Government Finance Germany e Germany also charges an income tax, They have also sold german government bonds which have helped their economy recently. Spending in 2015: Military- 55,968,000 Euros _ Education- 161,120,000 Euros s Healthcare- 303,584,000 Euros Law U.S.A. In 2015 there were 1,197,704 crimes committed in 2014, with an increase in violent crimes but a decrease in property crimes. There are 2,220,300 adults incarcerated in the U.S. No Death Penalty in most states Smaller regional courts and a larger national court called the supreme court ry Law Germany In 2014 homicide rate increased by 33% and burglary 44% In 2016 there were 63,100 people incarcerated in German Prisons Capital punishment is abolished in Germany The judges in German courts are actively finding information instead of acting as a referee, and most actions federally are able to be reviewed by the judiciary Current Relationship with the United States e The U.S. and Germany have a good trade relationship and are both very invested in each other economically, we have a treaty of peace and get along fairly well together lf
