History
1. India's IT Services industry was born in Mumbai in 1967 with the establi
shment of Tata Group in partnership with Burroughs.
2. The first software export zone SEEPZ was set up here way back in 1973, t
he old avatar of the modern day IT park.
3. More than 80 percent of the country's software exports happened out of S
EEPZ, Mumbai in 1980s.
Some Stats
1. 46.5 lacs direct jobs with 16.5 lacs indirect jobs as per estimates for
2016.
2. Massive employment generation.
3. The industry continues to be a net employment generator.
4. The sector has increased its contribution to India's GDP from 1.2% in 19
98 to 7.5% in 2012.

galore, are slowly starting to experience a geographical diffuse into other citi
es like Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune.
13. The research in the industry was earlier concentrated towards programmin
g technologies like Java, in the recent times, the research focus changed toward
s technologies like mobile computing, cloud computing and software as a service.
This shift is attributed to preference of clients towards the ubiquitous comput
ing over standalone computing and the growing demand for low cost computing solu
tions.
