Starting from 1888,[9] Lewis M. Norton taught at MIT the first


chemical engineering course in the United States.

University Rankings every year since 2011, while the QS World
University Rankings by Subject also ranked it as the world's best
institution in 12 different subject disciplines.[201] It is number one

2. University of Cambridge

Founded in 1209, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the


English-speaking world and the world's fourth-oldest surviving
university.
Perhaps most of all, the university is renowned for a long and
distinguished tradition in mathematics and the sciences.
Some of its most famous students are: Sir Isaac Newton, James
Maxwell who is considered to have brought about the second
great unification of physics (the first being accredited to Newton)

3. National University of Singapore

The National University of Singapore (Abbreviation: NUS) is an


autonomous university in Singapore offering publicly-funded
degree programmes. Founded in 1905, it is the oldest institute of
higher learning (IHL) in Singapore, as well as the largest university
in the country in terms of student enrolment and curriculum
offered. NUS is a research-intensive, comprehensive university
with an entrepreneurial dimension.

4. Technical University of Munich

By QS World Rankings 2012/13, TUM is ranked 1st in Germany and


53rd (overall) in the world. In the technical disciplines, engineering
at the TUM attained 21st position which is the highest ranking
among the German universities. The university also rose in the
natural sciences reaching the 25th position.[12]

In the Academic Ranking of World Universities, TUM is ranked 2nd


in Germany and 51st (overall) in the world. Chemistry at TUM
stands at 14th place worldwide, far above all other chemistry
departments in Germany.
