EDUC 386 Documentation: Extra-Curricular Event

Name of event: Softball game

Date of event: April 5th, 2017

Time you were there: 3:15-4:45

Summation: The webber girls, JV softball team were playing against another school.
Compared to the basketball game I went to there were a few less kids watching the
girls play. Students seemed to be lounging on the grass, playing on their phones or
talking with each other. It was a social event for them. The parents on the other hand
were invested and seemed to care a lot about how their kids were playing. I spent
most of my time observing the kids who were lounging, but I also learned a little bit
about softball. Also, it was interesting to see how competitive kids are at such a
young age.

What did you learn? I learned how important it is for parents to watch their kids play
sports. When I was growing up, sports was a huge part of my familys life. On the
weekends, all we did was drive from one game to another. Sports is a great way to
build school community. Spending time with parents as you both cheer on for their son
or daughter is a great way to show your care and support as a teacher. I also learned
how kids love to be competitive. It is a reason they love sports so much. Therefore it
is important to bring some competition into the classroom as well.
