High School Observation

Unfortunately, we were only given two class periods to see high school teachers work,

and I was sick for one of them. However, on Tuesday, I was placed in Mrs. Prices classroom.

She teaches AP Biology, and she did a really nice job teaching her class. The class was studying

gene carrying and evolution, and they took notes for the first thirty minutes of class. Mrs. Price

explained any questions and she described everything very clearly so the students understood

what they were doing.

There was a lot of student-teacher interaction in the notes. In the second half of class, the

students were given a project to create a gene tree using different types of candy. They would

think about homogeneous and heterogeneous structures and how these structures influenced the

genes of their types of candy. The students were given laptops and access to the internet to find

their types of candy and print the pictures out. Students were also given the option to work in

groups of two or three, which worked on their student to student interaction. Overall, this class

was extremely respectful and attentive and Mrs. Price was an extremely effective teacher.
