Lesson Planning
Waynesburg University

Pre-Instructional Planning:
The thought process that leads to the development of quality, meaningful
lesson plans

Guiding questions that will provide the framework for the lesson. (Respond to each question.)
Who will you be teaching? (Identify student grade level as well as academic functioning level and specific needs of
individual students)

I will be teaching my fourth grade students during science class. At the beginning of the unit, students will have a
basic understanding of the environment. Students will need to know basic information about environments and basic
information about computers.

Who (if anybody) will assist with the presentation of this lesson, and what will their role be?

There will not be any assistance.

What is the long range goal(s) that is tied to this lesson?

Long range goals for this lesson include:

• Students having an understanding of the environment including organisms and how they interact in an
area.
• Students having an understanding of computer programs and web-based programs used in the
classroom.

What is the specific learning objective(s) for this lesson?

Specific Objectives include:

• Students will be able to assess how organisms interact in an environment.
• Students will be able to differentiate environments (biomes) and classify organisms in each environment.
• Students will be able to use technology to create documents detailing information about environments.

What prerequisite skills/knowledge will students need to effectively access and participate in this lesson?

Students will need a basic understanding of what an environment is, and basic knowledge of animals specific to an
environment. Students will also need a basic understanding of a computer (how to use a mouse, how to access the
internet, how to type, etc.)

When within the stages of learning will this lesson be presented? (Is it a learning acquisition lesson, learning fluency
lesson, learning maintenance lesson, or learning generalization lesson?)

Acquisition and generalization will be used.

When will this lesson be completed? (Will it be a one-day lesson or a multiple day lesson?)

This will be a multiple day lesson, spanning over a two-week time frame.

Where should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (computer lab,
classroom, science lab…) AND what materials will be needed?

• The lesson should be presented in the classroom/ computer lab. Some parts of the lesson are
applicable for the classroom, while others each student will need access to a computer (with internet
capabilities).
• Materials include: computers (1 per student with internet capabilities), school digital cameras,
SMARTboard (with projector), printer.

Why are you planning to teach this lesson? Why must this information/skill be presented to the students?

Information presented in this unit correlates with state standards for fourth grade students. This information must be
presented as it is part of the district’s curriculum.

How does this lesson relate to the previous lesson? How does this lesson relate to future lessons?

This lesson integrates ideas from the previous chapters including information about organisms. Students will continue
to discuss how environments impact all organisms (including us).

How will you determine if students have met the lesson objective? (Think assessment)

Students will be informally assessed through observations using checklists. Students will also be formally assessed
using rubrics.
