Cherry glanced up at the sky the sun was directly overhead.

Noon
Cherry had a job. Attend school .Grow plants. Stay at home while her parents
attended Prairies meetings. It was all so boring.
Prairie was, in Cherrys opinion, the only cool leader. She was way cooler than
Panthalassa or Spriha, the fire and air elementator heads. And Jade she was
nice, but complicated.
And Prairie was awesome.
She was caring to everyone from mean people to microorganisms. Every plant
was in her care. She, like her fellow earth-elementators could study body-
language and understand others.
But she, like the rest of the world except Cherry, didnt understand the 1#
mystery of the world, except maybe the fifth element- Jade.
Cherry had met Jade only once, and Jade was kind to her, even though she was
only five then, seven years younger than she was now.
Jade had said something about death. And Cherry had felt something a
connection. She had suddenly had a blackout and Jades memories had coursed
through her, and had never left her since. Somehow, Cherry felt Jade could never
be leader. It wasnt her kind of destiny. She didnt want to be. So how had that
happened?
Suddenly, Cherry had the answer, almost like a voice calling through the mist.
Jade wasnt the water-elementator leader. The leader was pure evil.

Fiera sat on a chair of fire with a desk of fire and a book of fire placed on it in
front of her. The words were blue, like low flames. Jade sat, or rather stood next
to her. She gingerly squeezed between two tables of fire, and Fiera could tell it
took all her control not to blast the place in water.
In all duels between fire- and water-elementators, fire had to be quick. But if they
were, they could destroy water completely.
Kamala walked in and started to read with a small smile at Fiera and a curt nod
at Jade. I love these books.
Fiera was about to reply, but she saw Kamala giving Jade a really unpleasant
look.
Hi! Im Ja-
Jade was about to unnecessarily introduce herself, but she nearly banged into a
desk of fire and ducked under a cloak of water she was wearing.
She had narrowly missed death.
Stand back! she said, her expression livid and her voice calm and cold. She
summoned what looked like a ball of water.
Suddenly, a mini-tornado knocked Jade aside. It was Kamala.
You are not destroying my home after what you did to me.
She summoned a wall of fire, a form of attack even Kym couldnt perform, and
sent it at Jade. Jade half-blocked it, but it was too much. She fell back, dead.

Jade was not dead. Her pulse wasnt beating to the world but she could feel
it.All she needed was a restJade fell asleep.

Kamala reeled back at hat shed done. She hated Jade. Fine. But what shed
done.
Shed not only killed Jade, but had betrayed fire. Now it had broken the law
against a guest. Suddenly, she reeled back.
A man was standing there- tall, thin and redheaded. A young girl of eight stood
by, when suddenly a blast of ice knocked him backward, and she started crying.
Then Jade was talking to Savanna.
Jade, I sent Kamalas mother to Atlantis prison where she will die of hunger.
Youre the head, pretending you did it
More memories. Jade wasnt horrid. Savanna was. Shed killed an innocent
woman. Kamala felt tears streaming down her cheeks. She was alone.

Jade opened her eyes just enough to see Kamala crying. Her memories were
escaping, as they always did when she was close to death. Which meant they
were being viewed by Kamala.
The fire elementators cant know, she thought weakly. She opened her eyes.
Kamala could barely talk through the sniffs.
J-j-jad-de, youre alive. Im so sorry .Relief flashed across her face. She
explained everything to her.
Youre my sister? Jade stared at her. Im sorry, Kamala, everything you did was
understandable. Youre only 13.
She was back to her cool, calm self. This changes things. Savanna is dead. So
the new head is She grimaced. My backstabbing friend Caroline.
At the not-another-bad-leader look on Kamalas face, she added, Oh, shes nice.
She just abandoned us elementators to lead a normal life at 10. Anyone would.

Carolines communication device buzzed.

It hadnt buzzed in 11 years.

YOU ARE NOW HEAD OF THE WATER ELEMENTATORS.SAVANNA

IS DEAD. WE KNOW YOU, LEFT US, BUT YOU MAY BECOME LEADER IF
YOU WISH TO.YOU ARE THE MOST POTENTIALLY POWERFUL NOW.

REPORT TO ATLANTIS.
-JADE MARIETTE

Jades name sent a shiver down her spine. Her only friend. Whom she had
betrayed.
Caroline had grown up. She had gone to MIT at 14, the youngest to do so. She
had sworn to herself that she would never return to Atlantis except Jade.
Why? she asked herself. Why do I care?
Secrets to an entire element. Ice damage.
