[William] Wilson Wood timeline By Stephen Smith American Public Media 9.4.16 1815. Born circa 1815 in Virginia. Son of William Wilson Wood and a slave named Mary. 1838, Moved to TN with Wood family. Settled in Ocoee district, land vacated by Cherokee and offered as land grants. Town was Brittsville, TN. Wilson was a farm Jaborer and blacksmith. [family history] Ocoee was ceded to the United States when the treaty was ratified on May 23,1836. The removal of the Indians began in 1837 but the “Trail of Tears” was not completed until 1838. However, many white settlers ha been occupying the area for years.” June 1860 census shows that Samuel O. Wood owns two slaves, a male 45 and female 42. Civil War record show that Samuel. 0. Wood serve d in the CSA, 41>" TN Regiment, Company E. Rank at muster out = captain. 1861. William Wilson Wood [the father] dies, [family history] 1861. Wilson transferred to Samuel O. Wood on 10.26.1861. Bill of sale recoded in Meigs County Court 9.22.62. October 24, 1964. Governor Andrew Johnson declares emancipation in TN.* July 24, 1868. Wilson Wood buys 160 acres in the 1* district of Meigs County, TN from Issac G Lipton [or Lipeton] 1870 Census shows William Wood [race black] age 55, birthplace VA. Married to Sarah, age 41. Listed are 11 kids, ages 1-19. Delila, age 10, is listed as white. 1870 Agricultural census schedule shows Wilson Wood owning the following: 100 acres improved land 60 acres woodland Value of farm $2,000 6 horses 2 milk cows 5 other cattle 11 sheep 50 pigs value of stock $675 The farm produced 200 bushels of wheat 800 bushels of Indian Corn 25 bushels of oats 1878. Wilson Wood dies.
