Question 1 Mold filling (5 points)

Explain the use of multiple gates in injection moulding of thermoplastic materials and describe briefly the
advantages of simulation in the analysis of mold filling.

Question 2 Plastic materials (4 points)

Draw the typical stress/strain curve of a thermoplastic base material and the one of a reinforced plastic
material. Describe the different material behaviour and highlight the differences between the two curves.

Question 3 Part orientation and ejection (6 points)

Decide the orientation of the plastic part of figure 1. Draw the mould parting line and point out the
stationary plate of the mold and the movable one. If needed for the part extraction, define the geometry of
the mould slider or lifter and the orientation of the guide pin (or lifter rod) for the undercut withdrawal.
Justify your choices and assumptions.

Question 4 Injection molding (5 points)

Describe the function of the clamping unit of an injection moulding machines. Explain how the clamping
force can be estimated and provide the order of magnitude of its value.

Question 5 Injection Molds (4 points)

The mold is a complex system and can be subdivided into main sub-systems complying with different
functions. List these subsystems (not the single components) and describe briefly the function of each of
them.
