tt gd tng QUESTION 2. NO.1 Users reported excessive vibration after overhaul of ‘machine. Nomajor changes were made on the rolor and the same blades and bearings were utlized. Prior to overhaul the vibration levels were normal. ‘The problemwascured by ftingthe our labeantioll whip bearings manufactured by Fiat, Please ‘comment, and issue a corresponding techni mprovement/servicebulletinifapplicable including assembly details and build tolerances. ANSWER 2. NO. A four lobe bearing was developed by FIAT and put in place, we believe, ina W251 B2 unitin the middle ‘east inthe turbine end. The bearing was introduced ‘sa modification for a unit experiencing oil whip or whirloncoldstarts. Seefig.21.1 forthe configuration ofthis bearing. Westinghouse Canada has no knowledge of the performance of thisbearingand isnotableto provide {installation information at this time. ‘Westinghouse has designed a tilting pad bearing to replace the plain journal type in the turbine end of the W251 B2 frame, see Ag. 21.2, and this is the ‘preferred bearing option for this unit where oil whit is experienced, Westinghouse would caution users, that before deciding a particular vibration problem is related to cil whirl it is recommended that Westinghouse ‘engineering is consulted with detals ofthe problem. Itis entirely possible that Sting @ modified bearing may apparently solve the problem. The increased damping obtained may be reducing the vibration, but disguising the ral problem, ‘Westinghouse will issue bulletin onthe tilting pad bearing modification. kis entirely possible that fiting a modified bearing ‘may reduce the vibration magnitude, because of the ‘increased damping, but if the vibration is not being caused by oil whip the real problem wall merely be disguised.
