Packaging

The Problem
For the packaging project, we chose to assess the problem of spatial waste in
the context of DVD packaging. Aside from the obvious, CDs and DVDs are
practically identical in shape. So why is the packaging for a DVD so much more
wasteful than one for a CD? While the DVD company does use recyclable
plastic, cutting down the packaging would still save money and be better for
the environment. We seek to remedy these issues in our project.
Original Packaging Analysis
Our original packaging measured 19 cm x 13.5 cm x 1.5 cm
The original case had a volume of 384.75 cubic centimeters and a surface
area of 601.62 square centimeters.
The original amount of
unused air space was 97.06%
New Packaging Analysis
We decreased the thickness and length of the case resulting in
dimensions of 13.75 cm x 13.5 cm x 1cm.
We lessened the surface area by 175.87 square centimeters.

These changes were necessary because of the extreme amount of excess

packaging that comes
with the DVD.
Conclusion
The original packaging was quite wasteful. The only thing that was really
needed was the space around the DVD- the rest was all about marketing.
While we recognize that a 19cm x 14cm rectangle is much easier to work on
than a 14cm x 14cm square, everything can quite easily be fit if one
rearranges a few things and removes any unnecessary or irrelevant. We have
come up with a design that will most likely
be more efficient, despite a few possible
issues, which we hope you will
appreciate.
