THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT (NDM)

8th May, 2017

Press Release

The students of University of Juba today the 8 May, 2017 held a peaceful
th

demonstration in Juba, the capital city of South Sudan, expressing and

exercising their democratic rights to peaceful demonstration. The National
Democratic Movement (NDM) is in solidarity with the students and commends
them for their bravery and nationalistic stand in this critical eleventh hour in the
history of our nation, when the dictatorial and ethnocentric dysfunctional regime
of Kiir Mayardit failed to provide security and basic necessities to the suffering
and destitute masses of South Sudanese.

The paranoid regime in Juba shaken by the students demonstration embarked

on arbitrary arrest of those that participated in todays peaceful demonstration.
The government arrested seven students, some of the students arrested are:

1. Mr. Peter Garang Deng

2. Mr. James Oduho
3. Mr. James Kwaj
4. Mr. Garang Peyol

The National Democratic Movement (NDM) condemns in the strongest terms

possible the arbitrary arrest of students by the regime security apparatus and call
upon the government to immediately release the detained students without any
delay. We echo the sentiments expressed by the statement made today the 8 th

May, 2017 by the TROIKA and EU in calling for the release of political detainees
languishing in the regimes detentions for years without trials or any due legal
process. It is high time for the human rights organizations both local and
international to unequivocally condemn the arbitrary arrest of students and visit
the detention centers were they are held.

We, also call upon the public to support the students in organizing more protests
as peaceful means to achieving political, social and economic transformation in
the country. South Sudan is sliding into the abyss of destruction and
disintegration on daily basis under the incumbent, inept and corrupt regime of
Kiir and his Jieng Council of Elders, and it is a noble duty for all the revolutionary
forces to unify their ranks to salvage the country from the jaws of dictatorship
and tyranny.

Long live the struggle of our people

Long live South Sudan
