Notes from the Musical Director

Thank you very much for coming to Mirinesse Singers third

Mirinesse
concert. I am really excited to be bringing this programme to
you. I started the choir last October, principally because I
wanted the opportunity to perform a range of music that I
like! I remember listening to excerpts of Adiemus as a teenag-
er and it has been very enjoyable exploring and learning this
piece in greater detail. The greatest challenge of interpreting
this work is that, as singers, we are used to delivering the
Singers
meaning of the lyrics through the notes themselves. In
Adiemus, the lyrics are meaningless vocalisations, so the ap-
proach to interpretation is more akin to that of an instrumen-
Concert of Songs
talist, focusing on phrasing, melody, harmony and dynamics.
However, perhaps because I am a singer, I found myself at-
taching meaning to the vocalisations and creating images and
for Summertime
stories to the songs, based around the subtitle of the work, Featuring
Songs of Sanctuary. I did share some of these narrative ideas
with the choir, which provided much mirth during rehearsals. Adiemus by Karl Jenkins
I am not going to divulge my performance directions here
(you can ask the choir if you want), but you might find your-
self imagining stories, characters and ideas about sanctuary Directed by Sam Graper
as you listen this evening. The first half of the concert is,
again, made up of music I like, some of which you may know
and some, I imagine, which may be new to you. I hope that Wednesday 20th July, 7:30pm
you enjoy these songs, which represent different musical peri-
ods and styles. Finally, I would like to thank the choir for all
of their hard work. It has been a very new experience for me,
conducting adults, and they have been wonderful and open to
all of my ideas. They make a beautiful sound and I am sure
you will enjoy tonight's entertainment.
