Dear Ooly,

We are students from Austin High School, in Austin Texas. Our names are Claire
Segura, McKaan Zimmerman and Julia Heilrayne. We were assigned a project for geometry to
analyze a product and design a more efficient way of packaging this product. We decided to
analyze your Macaron Vanilla Scented Erasers. We noticed that most of the package was
excess and unneeded to produce your product. We have enclosed a photo of our prototype for
your erasers.

We obtained measurements by using the centimeter side of a ruler. We carefully

measured each side, and used the volume formula to determine the total volume was
189.175 cm3. We then calculated the volume of the macaroons which was 72.806 cm3 . After we
calculated the total volume and the macaroon volume we divided the macaroon volume by the
total volume to determine the percent of unused airspace, which was 56 % unused airspace.
That means over half of this package is unused, and therefore an unnecessary waste of plastic
and cardboard. In our new prototype we have only 13.79% unused airspace, making the
packaging more environmentally friendly. It decreased the overall size by 44% and decreased
airspace by 25.625%. This prototype is a small but efficient cylinder that still has the necessary
barcodes and packaging information. We have included photos for your reference or inspiration.

The changes we have suggested will benefit your company for many reasons. First off, it
is environmentally friendly, which consumers love. You can advertise on the package Same
product, 44% less packaging used! or something that shows how your company is taking steps
to help save our environment. Consumers love to feel environmentally conscious when buying
normal things, like erasers. Also, you will save money on packaging because you are using 44%
less packaging. Lastly, any step to reduce waste is the right step forward to save our
environment.

Thank you so much for reading our input. We hope you found our research insightful.
We look forward to hearing back from you!

Thank you,

Claire Segura McKaan Zimmerman Julia
