Project 3 Reflection
Project three was constructed around an argumentative format. For my argument, I spoke

on the benefits of online education versus the traditional face to face education found in school

systems. My argument was not about online education being more beneficial than face to face

education; rather, it was trying to persuade an education board to add more online classes to the

traditional education curriculum because of the benefits it can provide students. With this

argument, I had to refute face to face education to explain why online course are needed in

curriculum today. While arguing this, I gravitated toward four SLOs, or student learning

outcomes; they are SLO A, B, D, and J. These SLOs are of variation, which include, rhetorical

situation and genre, writing as a social act, grammar and usage, and research. I found that each of

these were very important to the success of my website for online education.
SLO A to analyze, compose, and reflect on arguments in a variety of genres, considering

the strategies, claims, evidence, and various mediums and technologies that are appropriate to the

rhetorical situation (page 4), under rhetorical situation and genre. This SLO fit in perfectly with

the project three. I created a website that had to analyze a two-different view point, argue them,

and later refute the opposing argument. The website added to the complexity of the medium

because it was not a traditional paper. The pictures, videos, statistics, and information really

enhanced the argument for online education. Being able to separate the arguments on separate

tabs also made it very easy to navigate and understand the topic. The next SLO that I analyzed

was in the category of writing as a social act.

SLO B, describes the social nature of composing, particularly the role of discourse

communities at the local, national, and international level (page 5). SLO B was a little more

difficult to analyze for project three. One of the things that makes SLO B integrate into the

project was the fact the project was a website itself. If it were to be another medium, I am not

sure how well this SLO would have worked. The website used statistics and psychology to

determine why online education has benefits to it. These things were taken from a pool of users

varying from different communities and social levels. It is important to notice this on the

website. Without using this research from bigger, more diverse group of people, the argument

would not be valid because it would be subjected to a small group of people. The next SLO

analyzed was grammar and usage.

SLO D is to improve your fluency in the dialect of Standardized Written American

English at the level of the sentence, paragraph, and document (page 6). When English courses

are performed at the colligate level, most people do not spend much time on grammar usage

because it should be proficient by then. However, it is just as important as improving ideas,

structures, and formats of a paper or project. In terms of project three, a website is a very popular

medium that people flock to when looking for instant information. Having grammar and the

dialect of the website be fluid is very important to the success of the website. Therefore, it is very

important to double and triple check every piece of information that is put on the website; it adds

to the credibility of me as a writer. If I were to produce a poorly executed website with spelling

errors, run on sentences, and choppy paragraphs, people would not rely as heavily on the

information that I want to provide for them. It is very important to be proficient in grammar and

usage. The last SLO that will be discussed is conducted in research.

SLO J, analyzes and describes the writing and research conventions of an academic field

in order to understand the different ways of creating and communicating knowledge (page 10).

This SLO describes the way to analyze the information used to write and research for an

assignment. It is vital that I know how to research information correctly and place it in my

website effectively. For instance, if I were to put a bunch of statistics and a diagram on a page

talking about the cognitively ability of a child, I would have to make sure they go with this topic

of the page and tie into the bigger idea of benefitting online education. If not these are just

number and pictures on my page that my audience can look at and get lost in. When creating my

website, it was essential to make sure everything I placed on it flowed from page to page. This

just makes the information I am trying to relay to my audience more convenient.

These SLOs helped contribute to the growth of me as a writer. Now I am not only able to

construct an essay, but I can apply this information in a traditional essay, straight to another

medium without error. Overall, I think this project was successful and allowed myself, as a writer

to grow and develop into different mediums.
