Itis designed for the rapid simultaneous determination of carbon and sulfur in coal, coke, ol, ashes, catalysts, ime, gypsum, sols, rubber, leaves, soot tobacco, waste, sand, lass, etc ‘The CS-500 can be supplied with up to four independent inftared cli. The sensitivity ofthese cells cen be customized to meet specific requirements. The IR-absorption lengths can be incviduall selected to offer optimum precision forthe analysis ofhigh andlow levels ofbath, sulfur and carbon. The CS-500 features a 16-bit microprocessor, a high temperature resistance furnace up to 1850°C and solid state infrared detectors with auto zero and auto range contrel. Separate cabinets eliminate any influence of temperature between the furnace and the analytical unit, This modular design dives the user fexblty to posiion the furnace to the left or right ofthe analyser and also allows the installation ofa TIC- module between thetwo, The modular design makes servicingmuch easier compared to single cabinet analysers. Analysis procedure The sample is weighed into a combustion boat on an electronic balance whichis interfaced to the CS-500. By pushing a button the sample weight is transferred into the CS-500. If required the sample ‘weight can also be entered manually. The ceramic boat with the samples placed on the furnace platfoim, The startkey is pressed and theanalysiscycie begins. ‘The sample is pushed into the furnace. At the end of the cycle, the analysisresultsappear on the builtin display. PC control with Windows 95/98/ME/2000/NT software Although the CS-500 can provide full operation with the built electronic unit, the use of @ PC simplifies operation andl reporting External PC control is essential when doing fractional analysis. All relevant information is cisplayed on the screen during and after the analysis. atkt large number ofresults can be stored depending upon the hard disk size. The same also applies to the maximum number of sample ‘weights that re stored before analysis. Any resultcan be recalled and selected for statistical calculations, such as average value and standard deviation. Calibration and diagnostics are just some of the: functions n the PLOTCS software. The CS-500 can beinterfacedwith most Laboratory Information Management Systems ( LIMS ). Specific details of the LIMS may have to be forwarded to ELTRA GmbH to ensure optimum performance. Ifrequired, PLOTCS can be: suppliedin therespectivenative language. Fractional analysis, Dus tothe fact that fee carton and sulfirbur atlower temperatures than carbides and sulfates, the CS-600 can separate and measure foe carbon, foe sult andeatbidesand sulfates. >a oF men pt ro xe The detector peaks are shown on the screen during analysis which helps for in method development and confirmation of correct operating parameters. All the fal results, together with 1D number, dete, time, sample weight, duraion of analysis etc. are displayed on the screen andstoredontheharddisk. ‘After inserting the sampleiin the combustion boat into the furnace, the boat gradually heats up. The free carbon and sulfur within the sample. burn fist, while carbides and sulfides burn several seconds later. The peak separation sofware integrates the individual peaks and then isplaystheresults atthe end ofthe combustion Infrared cells The infrared cells of the CS-S00 do not require any manual zero acjustments. The zero and sensitivity adjustments ofthe infraredcalls are permanently and automatically contralled by the electronics. The detectors utlize solid state sensors combined withinf aredfiters. The ‘sensors are not gas filed, thus eliminatinglong term problems due to gas leakage. The CS-500 can be equipped with up to four independentinfrared cells for carbon and sulfur determination. The lengths of all four cells can be individually optimized, to obtain maximum precision for the target analysis levels of each customer Each of the cells can be installed with inftared absorption lengths. ranging between Imm and 320mm, Built-in electronic unit Full operation ofthe C'S-500 is provided using the built-in electronic Unit which includes a 16-bit microprocessor with interfaces. for stetonchalance, inter and computer, The pine provides aha copy of date, time, ID, sarnple weight, analysis duration and carbo sulfur results. By pressing the mg key, the sampla weight transfered fomthe balancettothe analyser where tis shown onthe graphic display ofthebuit-inelectronicunt After pressing he Nr key, a 10-clait-sample identification number can be entered, which also appears on the display. By pressing the START key, the analysis begins, and the sample is entered into the furnace, During the analysis, bar graphs appear on the display, and represent the signals of each individual detector. Additionally, during the sample analysis the elapsed time is displayed on the screen. At the end of the analysis, the results are displayed in large figures, followed by %C and %S. The units of measure can be set to %C oF %CO,. and %S or %SO,. Further options like mg C / dm are also available, Allmessages on the display as wellasthe whole menu are availablein different languages. An extemal PC can be connected for acvancedprocessingoftheresults, Resistance furnace upto 1550°C The resistance furnace employs silicon carbide heating elements. Full electronic control includes current limitation during cold-start conditions to promate long element life. A separate sensor is used to ‘moniter ambient temperature and provide data for automatic reference point compensation ensuring that furnace temperature is not affected by fluctuations of ambient temperature, The fumace: requires approximately 10 to 15 minutes to reach operating temperature, Combustionefficiency ‘The design ofthe resistance furnace boat stop ensures that oxjgen carrier gas penetratesinto the crucible, ensuringefcient combustion ‘This design eliminates the need for fragile lances and honeycomb boat stops which ene to block easily with ash. Additionally the Boat slop protecls the combustion tube fom the aggressive combustion Prockicts, thus extencingthe life ofthetube. ‘The combustion tube is a simple straight ceramic tube that is robust and inexpensive to replace. The life expectancy of the tube is ‘measuredin thousands of analysos and nothundreds asitisthe case with other analysers. (Protectedlyy German utility model) ‘Avariety of combustion boats can be used the furace including the reusable mic boats (L=57mm, W=22mm, H=13mm). Porcelain or quartz boats are alsoan option, Electronic flow controller ‘An essential part of the gas flow system is the electronic flow controller, This provides a stable gas flow by eliminating the known cisadvantages ofmechanical controllers, TiCnodule Due tothe modular design ofthe CS-500, a module for total inorgari carbon (TIC) can be placed between the resistance furnace and th ‘analyzer. For the TIC determination, the sampleis treated with acidin the TIC module. TIC andtotal carbon (TC) can be alternately anslysed without-mocifications. For TIC analysis the sample is treated with ‘acid in an Erlenmeyer flask inside the TIC-module, The acid decomposes the carbonates in the sample, creating CO.. The oxygen flow purges the CO, out ofthe flask, through to the infrared detector. ‘Cis determined when the sample is introduced into the furnace for combustion andiIR detection, ‘Operating proceaure: ‘Anempty Raskis placed on the balanc ‘Thetare button is pressed. ‘The sample is put into the flask. The sample weight i ‘enteredinto the analyserby pressingakey. A magnetic stirer is placed into the flask. The flask is attached to the TIC-modiule and the heated platform is raised Thestart key is pressed. The aie mead wih thomagrae ser rtating. The released irom the s The infrared col begins detection. When athe CO, has been released from the sample, the detector's signal will return down to the baseline level and the analysis will be terminated CS-500 Specification MEASURING RANGES Low carbon | Low sulfur Up to 25mg C resp. up to 5%C at 500mg sample Up to 10mg S resp. up to 2% S at 500mg sample ” High carbon High sulfur Up to 500mg C resp. up to 100%C at 500mg sample ” Up to 100mg $ resp. up to 100% S at 100mg sample" SENSITIVITY Carbon ‘5pg C resp. 10 ppm C at 500mg sample * Sulfur 4ug S resp. 2 ppm S al 500mg sample " Low carbon ” Low sulfur” #109 C resp. +20ppm C at 500mg sample or +1% of C present +2ug S resp. +4ppm S at 500mg sample or +1% of S present High carbon "| High sulfur” +450ug C resp. #100ppm C at 500mg sample or #1% of C present +250ug S resp. +100ppm S at 500mg sample or +1% of S present (ea Normal sample weight Se NTON Normal analysis time 400mg for coal 60 to 120 sec, Fumace temperature (Gas required Adjustable up to 1550 °C Oxygen 99.5% pure 2 to 4 bar (30 to 60 psi) 3 min Tnlerfaces Chemicals Balance serial, printer parallel, CO, trap sodium hydroxide ‘computer serial H.0 trap magnesium perchlorate “Analyser power requirements Fumace power requirements 230 V AC 210% S060 Hz 230 VAC #10% 50/60 Hz 2000 W maximum heat up power 0.33.4/75W. 1000 W at 1360 °C stable temperature Weight Dimensions Width Height Depth ‘Analyser Furnace TIC-module Analyser ‘55cm (21") 82cm (20.5") 60cm (23.5°) 40kg 36kg——_28kg Furnace/TIC-module 33cm (13°) 52cm (20.5") 60cm (23.5°)” Balance 0.0001g to 60 g +0.0001 9° ‘Computer PC with HDD, 3.5° drive, CD-ROM, TFT flat screen and keyboard Color printer with automatic cut sheet feed, other options on request “ +1) Other ranges on request. 2) Reduce the sample weight for samples over 20% S. 3) Allow 15 cm (6") access area behind the furnace 4) Visit our web pages fr further details (wm. etragmbn.com/products/accessoris itn).
