N-Bit ALU Functions and Design

The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) is a digital circuit that performs arithmetic and logic operations. It can perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and logic operations like comparing operands and finding unmatched bits. The ALU contains an n-bit logic unit and an n-bit adder-subtractor. It also has a two-way multiplexer and flag outputs. The ALU is controlled by select inputs that determine the operation and whether it uses the adder-subtractor or logic unit. Figures 4.28, 4.29 and 4.30 show example designs and components of an n-bit ALU.
