Response to a Brief Report

This report is all about looking and finding previous evidence from work which I have done
in the past, in year 13. I will be looking at the unit 54 and unit 34. As part of this report I will
be mostly looking at my client meetings, as well as diary, questionnaires, evaluations and
employer expectations, showing evidence of how I responded to the brief.
Negotiating the brief:

Image of the brief I have chosen, which is from Unit 54 assignment 2, however I will be
mostly looking at how I responded to the work I completed in assignments 3 + 4. On the
brief you can see that it tells us the tasks we need to complete as well as the scenario we
are working for. After this, the headings are shown in which need to be covered, below that
are possible resources links that I could use. The tasks on this brief tells us that we will need
to create a logo, A3 poster design and a CD cover for The Pixels as well write and create a
graphics proposal. In assignments 3 + 4 I created a diary, questionnaire and evaluation
about my finished product.
Consultation with client -
Requirements:

Above you can see the details/specifications that the client had given us, this was basically a
long list of things we needed to include to ensure that our graphics would be right for the
Victoria Holt

client. The screenshot shows the notes which I took during the client meeting. I wrote the
notes down so that I could refer to them whilst working on my graphics throughout unit 54
to ensure I meet the requirements. If I didnt meet any of the requirements it meant I had
the chance to change things if necessary. The notes are quite simple as the demands
werent very specified which made it easier when it came to making the graphics. We didnt
have a client liaison diary for this unit.
Amendments/edits/finished product -
Below you can see my pixels graphics diary showing the amendments, the creation of the
whole product and the finished product at the end. The diary which I created included a mix
of screenshots and evidence information which told the client how I got to each stage in my
graphics creation. The diary was a good way of me keeping track of what I had done and any
changes I needed to make. In each lesson in which I worked on my graphics I had to have 3
headings aim, evidence and learnt. The diary responds to the brief by showing how the
graphics are made, as the whole idea of making the graphics is what the brief is getting us to
do. In the brief it specified that I needed a way of evidencing the steps and tools used to
make the graphics which is why I created this diary. The first page is in read-able form and
the rest as screenshots.
16/03/17 Session 1
Aim: Login and check emails, save my ILP and use Moodle. I will then begin to create my
graphics on Photoshop and fill in a diary and checklist.
Evidence: First of all I will create some folders for each of my Graphics. In these folders is
where I will keep the different versions of the graphics as well as any individual assets that
make up the images. I will then start to save images from the
internet.

Firstly I am going to create my logo, Ill start of by collecting some images that I need from
the Internet. To find these images I simply typed in pixels logo. I decided to use the image
below without the black background and I will change the colour of each letter so that it is
multi-coloured. I have also looked up band pixel images and found a guitar image I will use
on a slant position on top of my pixel word image. Altogether I will have three items that
make up my logo. Plus, two extra images of pixels for the reflection part and overlay. I have
changed my idea slightly from my storyboard, as the falling pixels under the word are now a
reflection of the word pixels.
Victoria Holt

I will open Photoshop and open up the image, because I screenshotted the image I firstly
had to crop it down. I then dragged and dropped the cropped image on my logo canvas. I
will then use the magic wand tool to remove the background colour whilst removing the
pixel squares at the bottom of the word, at the same time.

I then used the paint bucket, paintbrush and eraser to change the colour of the letters. This
was harder than I originally thought I would be because the bucket only coloured each little
square at once. I then used the paintbrush to go over any little gaps on the letters, which I
missed. I used the eye dropper tool to click on the colour that I wanted with the paint
brush..

Feedback from peers

As part of my feedback, I did a self evaluation where I went back over all my work to see if I
was happy with everything. In this evaluation I talked about anything I could of improved
upon and if I liked the look of my finished graphics. The feedback I gave my self tended to be
quite positive with not many things I would change. I didnt actually complete any
questionnaires and statistical reviews for this work as it wasnt required on the brief.
Legal/ethical/codes of practise
Legal and ethical laws wasnt a requirement, stated on the briefs for unit 54, so I havent got
any written documentation or evidence for this. However with all the work that I have
completed within in year 13 I have made sure that it is appropriate for the copyright and
ethical laws that are currently in place.
Opportunities for self development:
By creating an evaluation for my graphics shown below, it gave me the opportunity to write
down areas of self development that I had gained and areas for the graphics which I could
improve upon. This is useful because if I wanted to recreate the graphics again, I could look
back in the evaluation and see what I would of changed, then apply the changes to the new
graphics. In response to the brief the evaluation was a written summary of how the product
went and a personal description of my time management as well as developments skills. By
writing this evaluation it gives me the opportunity to look at my graphics from a different
point of view and criticise if necessary. When writing the diary I had to look at the graphics
using a certain criteria, for example to see if they were professional, met the brief/client
requirements etc. Below you can see where I completed a written diary talking about all 3
graphics I needed to make.
Victoria Holt

Effectiveness:
Extent to what the brief has been realised
The client gave me details for making my graphics including the name of the band, the
material which I need to make, the number of graphics I will need to produce and the
essential information I need to include. I made sure that my graphics had the logo used
throughout and the quality was of a good standard. The brief also asked me to produce 3
graphics that promote and advertise The Pixels band.
Use of appropriate methods and techniques
When creating my graphics, I had to use various techniques and skills in the process. I have
wrote about all the tools I have used in my creation diary and then given evidence of those
in my checklist with a screenshot. In my diary is where every step that I went through is
explained with screenshot evidence. I used various different tools throughout the process
and below are only a couple which I have used the most on each of my graphics. I also
made sure when using these tools that I kept a level of professionalism throughout.
In the process of making my graphics there were many tools/techniques that I used
include the magic wand tool that allowed me to highlight certain areas and remove
them. I mostly used this tool to get rid of the white backgrounds from my internet images. A
technique that I used a lot through out the production of my graphics is the layer/blending
effects where I could put a pattern overlay over text. I used another blending option called
stroke which allowed me to outline text. There is a couple of common tools I used in
Photoshop to make my graphics and these were things like the text tool, eraser/paintbrush
and line tool. The line tool allowed me to create a spine on my back cover CD graphic.
Another tool that I used was the rectangle marquee tool to highlight an area and then
remove it without deleting the whole graphic itself.
Level of professionalism achieved
When it comes to making my graphics look professional I have added extra effects to make
some of the text stand out more than others to catch the readers attention. I had to make
sure my graphics looked consistent and professional throughout so that my work
maintained a high standard. As I did a couple of quick drafts beforehand it allowed me to
get on quicker with the finalised versions of my graphics, which is another way how I kept a
level of professionalism. I think I created my graphics in a professional manner and used a
variety of skills to show that. If I wanted to make them more professional I would use a
more limited colour scheme so its not all multi-coloured. I also worked in a professional way
which meant that if I missed a session and was behind I could easily catch up in my own
time.

us that we will need to do a research task covering the range, write an illustrated proposal,
and complete storyboards and dope sheets for my 2D flash animation. I will also need to
attend a client meeting as specified on the brief.
Consultation with client -
Victoria Holt

Above you can see the details/specifications that the client had given us, this was basically a
long list of things we needed to include to ensure that my animation would be right for the
client needs. The screenshot shows the notes which I took during the client meeting,
including specifications for the animation. I wrote the notes down so that I could refer to
them whilst working on my animation and diary throughout unit 34 to ensure I meet the
requirements. If I didnt meet any of the requirements it meant I had the chance to change
things if necessary. The notes are quite simple as the demands werent very specified which
made it easier when it came to making the animation itself.
Amendments/edits/finished product
Below you can see my animation diary showing the amendments, the creation of the whole
product and the finished product at the end. The diary which I created included a mix of
screenshots and evidence information which told the client how I got to each stage in my

14/02/17 Session 3 + 4
Aim: For todays lesson I am going to aim to create all my graphics that are required for my
animation and start a diary. I will do this by using Photoshop. I will also aim to make my
soundtrack in Audacity as well as record my voiceovers.
Evidence: Firstly, I am going to search on google to find a dance studio image, which I can
edit in Photoshop to create my background image. Once I found my image, I am going to
save it in my work area and open it in Photoshop. I will then make sure it is the right size for
my animation stage size, which is 832 x 624. To make my image look more realistic I am
going to change the brightness and contrast to -23 and 40.

I am now going to look for a dance bag and water bottle image, which I can add to my
background image in Photoshop. I will follow the same process as I did to make my
background. I will open up my dance bag and water bottle graphics and I will drag them
individually onto the dance studio background. I will then use the magic wand tool to get rid
Victoria Holt

of the white backgrounds. I will then use show transform controls to change the sixe of my
added assets. My final background image is as shown below right.

Next I am going to create a small apple and chocolate bar prop, which will be used to tell the
healthy eating storyline. I will create these using Photoshop again as I prefer it to the Adobe
Flash software. I will firstly search for an animated chocolate bar, as the position is wrong I
will use the transform controls to rotate it slightly. I will then add on an angry face, which I
found on the internet to make it look as though it is bad to eat.

Feedback from peers -

I made this questionnaire at the end of unit 34 and gave it to 10 of
my peers to gather feedback about my finished animation. In
response to the brief, my feedback showed that my peers thought
the animation met the criteria and it got a high overall rating. I asked
questions such as if it met the target audience and if it ran smoothly
throughout. Part of the brief said that I had to get some results and
create a statistical review and this is the way in which I went about it.
Victoria Holt

This is the feedback which I gathered from the results of my questionnaire, it shows that I
collected the results and sorted them after this I then came up with a conclusion. The
feedback I gathered is as shown below.

Legal/ethical/codes of practise
Legal and ethical laws wasnt a requirement stated on the briefs for unit 34, so I havent got
any written documentation or evidence for this. However with all the work that I have
completed within in year 13 I have made sure that it is appropriate for the copyright and
ethical laws that are currently in place.
Opportunities:
By creating an evaluation for my animation shown below, it gave me the opportunity to
write down areas of self development that I had gained and areas for the animation, which I
could improve upon. This is useful because if I wanted to recreate the animation again, I
could look back in the evaluation and see what I would of changed, then apply the changes
to the new animation. In response to the brief the evaluation was a written summary of
how the product went and a personal description of my time management as well as
developments skills. By writing this evaluation it gives me the opportunity to look at my
animation from a different point of view and criticise if necessary. When writing the diary I
had to look at the animation using a certain criteria, for example to see if the content was
good for the audience and to see the qualities. Below you can see where I completed a
written diary talking about the animation I needed to make.

Genre
This is something, which I did not really consider, as it was not a necessary requirement for
the client. If I were to give my animation a genre it would probably be educational or
entertainment. I would say that my animation is educational as it teaches children age 5-11
years old how to stay healthy and what is good and bad for you. They are more likely to
Victoria Holt

watch it if they enjoy it and easily understand what is going on. I gave my animation a boring
but simple name, which tells the viewer exactly what my animation is about. I think the use
of the upbeat and popular sound clips add to the genre and entertainment as it will interact
with the younger generation well. As my animation has a purpose as well as entertainment
to it, children are more likely to want to watch it.

Content
The finished animation content resembles my original idea as it continues the dance class
theme and has all the correct scenes, which were marked on my storyboards. A couple of
the scenes were tweaked towards the end because I had to add another boy character into
the storyline. This meant that instead of the planned scenes 3 + 4. What
actually happened was the boy came on stage and talked about what is
good and what is bad about what you eat. Throughout my animation,
the characters stop moving a few times, as I had a few technical
difficulties with getting their legs to move throughout. At a couple of
points, the arms of the dancer do not move how I wanted. At the end of
my animation I re-added the music back again instead of just having
dialogue and silence. At the end of the conversation between the girl and boy there is a big
gap between the dialogue and music, as I could not fix this problem however, it does not
sound too bad. Other than these slight problems, I followed my dope sheets to match my
original intentions and I am very happy with how it turned out. From my dope sheets
details, I changed the background music so that it was slightly quieter than what were I had
intended, this is so you could hear the voiceovers clearer.
As I began to put my animation together I realised I was spreading the movements out too
much over more frames than I planned for each scene. I had to do this, as there would not
be enough frames by the end of my animation. Towards the end, there is a couple of
frames, which I would have changed in order to make the dancers arms
move as well as the legs. In general, the sound clips and voiceovers were
placed in the right place and very nicely synced with the movements on
stage. The general content of my animation is the same as what was
written and drawn on my dope sheets.

Skills:
New skills
At the end of a couple of units, there was a task which asked us to talk about the
employability skills that would be needed in future employment/jobs. This was a piece of
required documentation at the end of either of my chosen units but I did complete this
document for a unit such as 33. Below you can see the documentation I completed, in
slightly smaller readable form about the new skills that an employer would expect you to
have.
Employability skills These are the skills that employers may be looking for in order to be able to
employ somebody new for a certain job. All of these skills I have used throughout my assignment in
order to make the TV ident. Employers will be looking to employ someone with specialise knowledge
on each of these main skill subjects.

Maths:

Throughout this assignment for my ident I have used maths quite a lot whether its for my budget or
just simple percentages like working out how many people answered what to each question. Firstly, I
had to collect some data from the questionnaires which were filled in by my peers and when I had
collected and sorted through the data I then had to find the averages. To do this as a percentage I
worked out the number of people and times it by 10 as I questioned 10 people altogether. Another
example of me using maths for this project is where I had to work out how many scenes I would
have and how long they would last. I used this maths on my dope sheets in Assignment 3. In the end
I made each of my 6 scenes/stages around 5 seconds long so that my ident fitted the right length of
30 seconds. I knew that 5 seconds would be right because when I did a calculation of 6 x 5, the total
was exactly 30.
Victoria Holt

English:

English is also another valuable part of this assignment. I used English by to make sure that my work
was accurate in terms of spelling, grammar and punctuation so that the client can understand and
read through my work without any problems. English is useful in this assignment because it allows
you to easily proof read through your work and possibly change words so that they are
slightly more advanced. Proof reading through my work will ensure that I get a better
grade and wont have to upgrade my work. When doing the peer reviews I needed to have
good English skills so that I could collect together my evidence and write about it easily.
When using software in the production of my ident it is good to consider the spelling and
punctuation throughout my ident as other people may want to use the product. English is
also useful for the use of software because if you didnt know how to do something and had to look
it up, you would need to read about it on the internet, so would need good reading skills.

ICT:

It is clear that all the work is done on ICT equipment throughout this assignment, which shows
that ICT is a vital skill when creating a kind of multimedia product. Firstly, I have used many
different skills on various softwares such as on Director and Premier Pro in order to improve
and make my ident unique to others. When writing up the plans on the computer I had a basic
knowledge of how PowerPoint and Microsoft worked which helped me quickly write up neatly
all my work. By typing it is much quicker and more professional because if you make a mistake
you can easily click backspace to delete it. By having this skill, it means I will be able to use it again
and again on any kind of job. Most of my design work was done by hand first on a storyboard and
dope sheet and then was designed on the computer using Photoshop. File management is also
another useful skill to have as it has helped me become more organised and helped me
find the files that I need when I need them. By putting all my work in separate files it
means that it doesnt get confusing and they all are kept separately. This is a good skill to
have as a potential employee because being organised means that you can work and
keep on time with deadlines. When it comes to peer feedback I used ICT skills to type up
the results that I had gathered from my class peers. By using ICT, it meant I could make electronic pie
charts in word to show a visual representation of the data and doing it on the computer is more
accurate than drawing one.

Communication:

In my assignment I have used communication in order to research what kind of programs people
watch and like. Its important to communicate with the client so that if they dont like
anything they can tell me and I can make slight changes to my ident before I export it. When
going into a job its useful to be able to communicate successfully so that you can follow
rules and instructions. When creating my designs/storyboards/dope sheets this was an
important thing to do so that my client could look and make sure that they were happy with
the ideas I had come up with. We discussed this via communication in a client meeting
where we spoke for around 5 minutes and the client came up with some suggestions. After
the meeting I then wrote up some notes in a client liaison document.

In one of the previous assignments I used a PowerPoint presentation where I had to show and
talk through a pitch about my ideas and plans for my ident. By doing this it is a good way of
communicating with the audience and clients and again gathering more ideas. At the end of my
pitch I received several peer reviews and opinions.
Victoria Holt

Punctuality:

Punctuality is the distinctive way of being able to complete a required task before or at a previously
designated time. These designated times for my ident assignment were given on my ILP and
Timeline. On my ILP it shows the different tasks that I have to complete on each session and
they have to be finished by a general date called a deadline. By being punctual throughout
this assignment it meant that I found it much easier to keep on top of work and to deadlines.
By meeting deadlines, it meant that client is kept happy as well as being able to tell what I still
need to complete. By being punctual it means that the employer will know that you can
handle big workloads and be organized so that all work is completed on time. By attending all
lessons, it means that work can be completed and I wont need to do any at home. During this
assignment I hardly did anything at home as I didnt have access to the correct software. The
last thing to consider was client meetings, I was punctual in these by making sure that any
suggestion that were made had been changed by the second meeting with client.

Legal and Ethical requirements:

I have considered legal considerations throughout this assignment by making sure that I have
gathered my assets from the internet and they are copyrighted. The reason why copyright is used is
because it ensures that your work is safe and cannot be copied by anyone. Another purpose of
copyright is to make sure that a creators work is protected if it ever gets stolen. By being the person
who holds the copyright Im the only person who can authorise the reproduction of work even if my
work is on an electronic device.

Throughout my ident I have made sure that I have taken into consideration ethics so that I dont
discriminate against anyone by race, age, disability and gender. By doing this I had to make sure that
my videos were suitable for everyone and the language that was used was appropriate.

By taking into consideration representation it means that a person that speaks, acts or is
present changes the way they do things officially for something else. It is also the way that
someone or something is described. In media on a TV ident, representations are the ways
in which people are treated in different groups, communities, experiences or topics and
then judging them from a different viewpoint. It can sometimes be based on race, religion, gender,
sexuality and web. The way I will represent my project is so that people can clearly access the ident
and I will make sure that it fits the client needs and all the users purposes. In terms of
representation on TV it is quite tricky however I will make sure all the content I use is suited fairly to
all communities and groups.

Conclusion:

When looking back at the use of these skills throughout this assignment, they are all useful when
making you more employable when looking for work or further education after college. The main
reason why employers look for these skills is because they are key in almost any job whether its
working in an office or a practical job. To conclude I think my strongest skill is maths and ICT as they
are the skills I have used and improved the most during the course of this assignment.
Communication and punctuality are also my stronger areas as im a very organised and hard working
person.
