Senior Project Overview
Senior Project Overview
Prison overcrowding, according to former POTUS Barack Obama is one of the nation's largest problems
in America. My research paper goes through why this is such a large problem facing America, what its
effects are, and how we as a nation can fix it.
Project Description:
My project was held at the Advanced Technology Center at Tidewater Community College in class room
H160 where I held an interactive seminar with a key guest speaker (a police officer with expert
knowledge in the field), a brief powerpoint and speech given by me, an online game/quiz created on
Kahoot.it and a facebook live audience as well as in person guests. There were refreshments and pizza
provided as well.
I specifically asked CPO Jim McElligott to come and speak at my event because I knew he would be the
best fit to relay what my research paper was all about to my audience. This seminar was a way to spread
public knowledge on the issue of prison overcrowding, and it accomplished just that.
As a student in the Legal Studies Academy, I have a hand of background experience visiting local jails
and speaking with law enforcement officers that I would otherwise not have been able to if I were not in
the academy. This gave me inspiration to join the Youth Police Academy as an internship where I was
able to grow an even broader realm of knowledge regarding our nation's prison systems and laws.
Special things Id like judges to consider and look for:
I would like the judges to consider how much these projects have allowed each student to grow and how
great of an academy we have here at First Colonial.
