She had attended Union ‘Mine the first semester and transferred to El Dorado in January. She was somewhat lost and looking for an identity; unfortunately, she took the easy path and got involved with some questionable friends that resulted in some inappropriate behaviors. | am proud to state that Skylar finished the semester better than she started. She stayed out of trouble for the remainder of the term and brought her GPA up to a 3.0. She has not looked back since; she has built her overall GPA to a 3.2 forall four years and she has not had any discipline issues since her freshman year. ‘Some of this can be attributed to the support she received from her mother to get through those darker freshman days. But most of the change is directly related to Skylar changing her friends and her ways and deciding she wanted to do something bigger with her life. She took advantage of opportunities to get involved in some positive school activities, such as Dance and Cheer. She blossomed as a quiet leader in the Dance Program; finishing her fourth year in Dance as the president of the Dance Club. In addition to the many hours she has committed to Dance and Cheer, Skylar spends many hours each month volunteering with the STARR program which sponsors special events for the community. She also is an active member with the Faith Out Loud Club on our campus. Skylar is one of the great success stories I've been involved with over my years of teaching; she could have easily fallen through the cracks and wasted away in high school. But she chose to make changes in her life that have opened many doors for her future. | don’t know how her journey will end, but | am sure she will be successful at whatever she chooses to do. Her tenacity and resilience will help her get through the challenges and give her the focus to complete her goals. {As Skylar looks to move on to college, | believe she is a student that will make us proud to have been a part of her life and | am sure she will make your organization proud to have helped her with her financial needs in college. | highly recommend that Skylar Brooks be granted your organization's scholarship.
