Dr. VUKAN R.

VUCHIC, Emeritus Professor of Transportation


Systems Engineering and City and Regional Planning,
University of Pennsylvania

Since 1967 Dr. Vuchic has lectured at Penn, and at more than 100 other universities. His
research, focusing mostly on urban transportation engineering, planning and policies,
has been published in his three Transit Trilogy books: Urban Transit Systems and
Technology, Urban Transit Operations, Planning and Economics and Transportation for
Livable Cities, and in over 150 papers and reports. He has been consultant to U.S.
Department of Transportation, cities of Belgrade, Beijing, Lima, Moscow, Naples, Perth,
Philadelphia, Rome, Singapore and others.

Professor Vuchic has introduced many new definitions, concepts and characteristics of
urban transportation modes and analyzed their roles and impacts on livability of cities.
His students have become leading engineers and planners in many cities and countries.

During his career and after his retirement in 2010 Professor Vuchic has obtained many
awards, including the first Lehner Medal in Germany, Lifetime of Academic Distinction
Award from APTA, two Honorary Doctorates from universities in France and Canada,
and memberships in Academies of Sciences in Serbia and Russia.
