Introducing THE CARTER FAMILY —$—$< Back in a beautiful little valley at the foot of Smokey Mountain, in western Virginia near the ‘Tennessee line, lives the famous Carter Family. There have always been Carters in that valley, a8 far back as anyone remembers; but it remained for the present generation to produce musicians ‘who would be known all over the world. ‘Years ago young A. P. Carter was traveling through the country selling fruit trees for & liveli- hood and singing as a hobby. Over in Wise County he met Sarah Doherty who helped her father on the farm, and after her daily chores were finished, passed her spare time singing che native melodies of the mountains. When A. P. happened to be in the vieinity he tried to sell Sarah some of his fruit trees, but Sarah married him instead, Together. they moved over into the valley and settled with the Carter Family. Shortly after that, Sarah's cousin, Maybelle Addison, came visiting, bringing along her guitar ‘and banjo. There she met A. P.’s brother, promptly fell in love with him and became a Carter and ‘moved over into the valley. ‘This brought three musicians into the family, so it was only natural that they should play and sing together. On warm summer evenings they sat on the grass playing and singing for the rest of ‘the Carters. Other residents of the valley, passing by, would pause to listen and soon the Carter Family had built up a reputation. Their fame spread beyond the valley; school entertaimnents bogan to seck them, and one day a Vietor man heard them sing and signed them for recording. ‘Almost at onee they became internationally famous phonogranh stars. ‘The Carters still live up in the valley in the Smokey Mountain country, in pleasant little cabins built on the hillside. They farm their acres, sing to their babies, and enjoy their simple home life in their own quiet way. They compose songs which they “try out” on the home folks before they sing them for the records. When the valley people like their songs they are pretty sure to be a success in ‘the outside world. Judging from the popularity of their phonograph records, the outside world enjoys the Carter Family’s music and in answer to the numerous requests for a folio of thelr songs, ‘we offer this album of SMOKEY MOUNTAIN BALLADS. —e—— CONTENTS of the DE LUXE EDITION ; 50 SONGS x Page I-Home Onthe Ranges. ee eee eee Victor Record—V-40186 42—The Utah Trail ES Ee eo a oe Mee 3 4 =3-Bring Back My BlueByedBytoMe. 2... 8 4God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign 5. ee $—Keep On the Sunny Side. eee Le Oe —6-Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow, || i " Soy -Swet Fem. 7s it nie, Cees 3 12 = 8-Chewing Gum. 2 z , ry 3 9-IHaveNoOnetoloveMe . . - . + we 15 ; 10~The Grave On the Green Hillside. : ‘ 16 .
