quality systems

NOTE
Each phase is never
accomplished as a separate
step. Instead, several Coding Design
activities may happen
simultaneously or may be
repeated.
CONCEPTS
Different phases of SDLC
Phase #1: Preliminary Investigation
The preliminary investigation
phase consist of:
Identifying the problems,

Investigation opportunities, and objectives.
Determining information
requirements

Phase #1: Preliminary Investigation
PHASE #1A: Identifying the problems, opportunities,
and objectives.
Preliminary o Analyst must look to what is occurring in a
Investigation
business, in order to pinpoints problems.
o Opportunities are the situations that can be
improved through the use of computer-based
information system
o In objectives, analyst must first discover what
the business is trying to do.
People involve: Users/Beneficiary, System Analyst and the Project/System
Managers.

Phase #1: Preliminary Investigation
PHASE #1A: Identifying the problems, opportunities, and
objectives.
Preliminary Activities
Investigation
- Interviewing the users
- Summarizing data acquired
- Estimating the scope of the project
- Documenting the results
Output:
Feasibility Study/Report together with the problem definition and summarized
objectives.
CONCEPTS

Phase #1: Preliminary Investigation
PHASE #1B: Determining human information
requirements
Preliminary o To understand how users interact in the work
Investigation
context with their current system
o Analyst will use different data gathering
methods:
Interactive method interviewing,
investigating hard data and questionnaires.
Unobtrusive method observation and
researching.

Phase #1: Preliminary Investigation
PHASE #1B: Determining human information
requirements
Preliminary o Analyst will use those methods to pose and
Investigation
answer many questions concerning the user
interface including questions such as.
o What are the users physical strength and
limitation
In other words,
What needs to be done to make the system audible, legible, and safe?
How can the new system be designed to be easy to use, learn, and
remember?
How can the system be made pleasing or even fun to use?
How can the system support a users individual work tasks and make
them more productive in new ways?

PHASE #1B: Determining human information
requirements
Preliminary
Investigation
People involved: System Analyst and users, typically
operation managers and operations workers.

The systems analyst needs to know the details of current system functions:
- the who (the people who are involved),
- what (the business activity),
- where (the environment in which the work takes place),
- when (the timing),
- and how (how the current procedures are performed) of the business
under your study.

Phase #2: Analysis The next phase that the
systems analyst undertakes
involves analysing system
needs.
Implementation

Tools to be used:
Data flow Diagrams
Activity Diagrams

Phase #2: Analysis
PHASE #2: Analysing system needs

Analysis The systems analyst prepares

o A systems proposal that summarizes what has been
found out about the users, usability, and usefulness
of current systems;
o Provides cost-benefit analysis of alternatives;
o And makes recommendations on what (if anything)
should be done.

Phase #3: Design In the design phase of the
SDLC, the system analyst uses
the information collected

Phase #3: Design
PHASE #3: Designing the Recommended System

Design Part of the Logical Design

- Devising the user interface (VTOC, Program
Flowchart, IPO)

Part of the Physical Design

- Physical user interface (menus, textboxes, labels,
forms, and reports)
- Data Repository(Database)
