Materials: Desks Time: 25 minutes
Dry Erase Markers
Smart Board

CCSS: RF.2.3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
L.2.1.f. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when
writing or speaking-produce, expand, and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences.
Objectives: Given a second-grade word, the student will be able to spell it with 80% accuracy.
Given a second-grade word, the student will be able to write a sentence containing the word with
80% accuracy.

Procedure:
This lesson will serve as a review and practice for spelling second grade words. The students will
be asked to tell how we know if a word is a long vowel sound. After reviewing, student will be
given a dry erase marker and told that they are to write the word only, and not draw any pictures.
Students will then be given a word orally, and their task is to write the word on their desk.
Students will be given words from the following categories; cvce words, words containing vowel
teams, and sight words. Students will use their knowledge to spell each word on their desk,
erasing when the teacher says to. After each student spells the word, the teacher will spell the
word correctly on the Smart Board for all to see.
Students will also be given a word and asked to use it in a sentence, and write the sentence on
their desk. After each student finishes, students will be asked to share their sentences with the
class. Students will check their work to make sure they have the word used correctly, capital
letter at beginning, and ends with appropriate punctuation.
At the conclusion of the lesson, student will be given a wipe to erase the left over marks from
their writing.
Groupings: While all students are listening to directions given by the teacher, this lesson is done
individually. Each student is responsible for spelling each word given, or writing a sentence
using a given word.
Assessment: This is used as a formative assessment that will show what spelling patterns each
student understands, and which they need to continue to work on. For some students, this is a
trial for their IEP goals.
