Sports Verbs

The verbs go, do and play go together with different sports. Look at the following explanations and examples:
Go is used with activities and sports that end in ing: I go swimming nearly every week.
Do is used with recreational activities and with individual, non-team sports, or sports that do not use a
ball: I do karate at school. Bodybuilding and boxing also follow do.
Play is used with team sports, sports that use a ball, and competitive sports or activities: We play chess
every night.
However, the verb practise is NOT used to talk about doing sport/a sport in general; it means to train: My
football team practises on Sunday mornings.

take up (=comenar) a new sport
perform (=realitzar) a difficult move
compete (=competir) in a race
challenge (=repte) yourself
score (=anotar/puntuaci) a point / a goal
suport (=recolzar) a team
beat (=colpejar o guanyar) your opponent
