Adopt- A-Class

Adopt-A-Class is a group project that took place in the beginning of spring semester in

my Peer Counseling class. One of our rolls as being Peers is to teach of class, either 9th or 10th

graders for one day in the next 8 weeks in Spring semester. We want to help younger classmen

when it comes out to college, even though they are still not not quite in the mindset for college

readiness, it is our mission to at least get them exploited into the world of senior year and college

readiness.

Each week my group is responsible to create a powerpoint for our lesson as well as a

Kahoot review game to go with it. We specifically touch upon A-G requirements during our first

week with the kids because instead of pushing college we understand that they are still

underclassmen and so we thought that the lesson would be more meaningful if touch upon the

basics of high school. Then as our lessons progressed, we started touching upon what colleges

are looking for in a well rounded student. However, since we are Peers, we also understand the

importance of feedback and so in the last couple of sessions we had with the kids, we wanted to

know what we should teach next for the next lesson, and so we managed to spring up a lesson

about some HBCUs and gaming colleges.

However we dont go through the eight weeks without getting some feedback from the

students or the teacher. Adopt-A-Class is a part of our grade and so their opinions do matter.

There scores averages out to be a passing grade, but at the end of the 8 weeks our advisor expects

us to compose a notebook of all the lessons, powerpoints, surveys, and reflections. Since this is a
group effort we split the work evenly. My partner and I are in charge of creating powerpoints

while another set of people are working on the Kahoot.
