Summary: In general, the Congolese are considered to be a
fairly religious nation. On the eastern side of the country
slave routes from Arab trade spread Islam which has resulted
in significant Muslim populations and many mosques. The
Catholic Church remains strong today because of the arrival
of Portuguese missionaries in the region many centuries ago.
Almost half the population are Roman Catholics.
