The march for rights or against lives?

By: Madison Moller

The Womens March, a march and rally held by the Womens March Organization, took
place on January 21, 2017, the day after the the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump. The
march, modeled after the 1963 march on washington for jobs and freedom included many
celebrity and political appearances. Hundreds of thousands of women, men, and children non-
violently protested in Washington D.C. and worldwide to raise awareness for womens rights,
immigration reform, and LGBTQ rights. Included in the March were current controversial topics
such as abortion, climate change, and planned parenthood funding. While around 470,000 people
came to Washington D.C. more than a million marchers came together worldwide. The New
York Times reports The womens march in Washington was roughly three times the size of the
audience at President Trumps inauguration. The march has become controversial within
politics due to main reason of the march, to protest Donald Trumps presidency. Many Trump
supporters and conservatives felt offended by the attack on Trump and the exclusion of pro-life
defenders. The Blaze reports that Pro-lifers argued that the event was not about celebrating
women or advocating womens rights at all. Instead, they said the event was organized only to
push progressive values-including abortion. Meanwhile, supporters of the march believe they
were defending their natural rights as women and utilizing the first amendment, freedom of
speech, to their ability. For or against, this march that drew millions, will contribute to history
and women's rights.
