Service Project 2017

Taking part in service can make a huge difference along the way in your life and others

lives. Service not only builds up your character but also benefits the community around you. For

this years service project I took part in: Helping run the Pittsburgh Marathon, a Seneca Valley

volleyball tournament dedicated for children with disabilities, the St. Ferdinand Church festival,

the North Catholic Faculty meeting, the St. Alphonsus Harvest Home Dinner, the St. Killians

Fish Fry, the North Catholic open house, and what I am focusing on for this paper, the Miracle

League. I participated as a volunteer for three seasons of Miracle League. This service was the

most important and effective for me. I will prove this by discussing the service I completed and

stating how it affected others and myself.

The Miracle League is a national organization focused on building baseball fields

designed to accommodate children with special needs. I took part in this for three seasons and

have continued to enjoy it. While in season, there is a baseball game every Sunday, held at the

Cranberry Park. All the volunteers (which they call buddies) and kids gather and we help them

play and have fun. This past fall I was paired with Lauren. Lauren was one of the special needs

children that attended every week. She was the sweetest and most loving little girl I have ever

met. I would hold her hand as she walked the bases and play catch with her on the sidelines. It

made me so happy to be with her and have fun together. Lauren had the biggest smile which

always made me smile. I knew that by helping Lauren, simply have a good time, benefited me

and more importantly, her.

The Miracle League benefits my community because it brings together special needs

children and volunteers, like me, to appreciate each others presence. I also benefited from taking

part in The Miracle League. Being able to be around these children made me feel good because I

knew that they appreciated it. This service also benefited me by improving my character.

Working with these children reinforced the fact that we are all created by God and that we are all

perfect. Overall, I loved being a part of The Miracle league and will continue to take part in it. I

really like being able to be paired with one of the children and get to know them. My favorite

part about this act of service is being reunited with Lauren and seeing a smile appear on her face.

Performing service is very important and beneficial. Service benefits others and also you.

The slightest bit of service could change both your and another persons life. Taking part in The

Miracle League has built my character and taught me to respect children with special needs. I

believe I have helped and changed my buddys life. I have been a part of the Miracle League

since the fall of freshman year and hope to continue for as long as I can.
