Independent Research Pd. 2

Project Proposal
In 2015, the Americas were introduced to its newest epidemic Zika virus. Affecting
hundreds of thousands of people, the Zika virus has become a public health issue that has had
serious implications for travelers, especially pregnant women. However, even though it has
spread into the United States in areas such as Florida and Texas, many people in Maryland still
dont know very much about this virus and how to protect themselves against it. To increase
awareness of Zika, I will create a radio PSA that will explain the harms and dangers of the virus,
how it is transmitted, and how people can protect themselves when travelling to areas where Zika
is more prevalent. My audience will be listeners of WMUC 88.1FM in the Baltimore/College
Park area. Many students have heard of Zika virus because of its news coverage, but dont really
understand why its so dangerous and how they can protect themselves when travelling out of
state. To do this I will need to contact the radio station for a more in-depth list of guidelines
before submitting it. I plan on using my research on prevention and protection techniques for
raising awareness.
