Local Case Study

Proposed PNR Central Terminal Hub

Presented as a thesis at the Mapua Institute of Technology, the NAME is an

intermodal passenger station for the PNR and other public transportation vehicles that could
increase the demand use of the railway transportation and address to the current
infrastructure rank of the country.

The chosen sight was at the Tutuban Station which shares undeniable similarities with the
Edsa-Taft station such as

STRENGTH:
- It is a place of commerce
- Large number of population goes to this place
- Public transportation are good because there are minimal number of private car
owners
WEAKNESS:
- Crowded street vendors
- Multi-culture place (Chinese, Filipino, Muslim etc.,)
- Crimes such as stealing are somehow frequent in this place
- Traffic congestion

For the station, the design concept was the hub-and-spoke paradigm, a system of
connections arranged like a chariot wheel, in which all traffic moves along spokes connected
to the hub at the center. The model is commonly used in industry, in particular in transport,
telecommunications and freight, as well as in distributed computing.

The small number of routes generally leads to more efficient use of transportation resources.
Complicated operations, such as package sorting and accounting, can be carried out at the
hub, rather than at every node. Spokes are simple, and new ones can be created easily.
