Summarized Well Data 3. Study on the Waripi Sandstone by Shigehiro MORIYA December , 1998 ‘Monara Cokamala- tn Fant MM, Thain Ho aka 10840; Indonesia ‘Prone (2-20 00 = 2415 Fan: (6221) 2-468 INTRODUCTION Aas Since the establishment of JOB PERTAMINA-IGO on October 1, 1998, a geological study on the Semirak Block has been conducted. The main purpose of this study is to construct a geological concept and to clarify the petroleum dynamics in the Semirak Block. With the intention of accomplishing these purposes, all available data were compiled and intensively studied. The results of this study will give a reasonable guide to the interpretation of the newly acquired seismic data, and to the selection of well locations. This is a subsequent study of the Joint Study that was conducted by PERTAMINA and JAPEX from November 1996 through March 1997. The final target of this subsequent study is to establish a guide for the exploration strategy in the Semirak Block, whereas the Joint Study was conducted in order to evaluate the potential of the hydrocarbon accumulation in the Bird Head area so as to judge whether new exploration activities should be commenced of not. Based on the difference of the purpose between these two studies, geological data of the Semirak Block and adjacent limited area was intensively studied in this study, while the data of wide area including Misool, Tamuloi and Inanwatan blocks were extensively studied in the Joint Study. As a result of the joint study, it was concluded that the Semirak and Kamundan Blocks (parts of the Inanwatan Block) were so prospective that a further exploration activities were recommended. Since the study is still in progress, this report is not a final one but a informal interim report that consists of only three chapters, “summary of regional geology”, “summarized well data" and "study on the Waripi Sandstone”. These chapters will be followed by several other chapters in a final report. Results of the study on the Jass, Tipuma and Ainim formations and petroleum system in the ‘Semirak Block will be reported in a final report. |. SUMMARY of REGIONAL GEOLOGY Oe OMe Major Geological Event Late Permian to Triassic Jurassic Cretaceous Paleogene - Eocene Late Miocene - Recent 1. Major geological events ‘Major geological events which took place in NW Australia through to Irian Jaya are shown in Attachmentl-1. These major events are closely related to the petroleum system in {rian Jaya. 2. Permo-Triassic age Intra-continental rifting took place on the Gondwana Land, and non-marine and restrict marine sediments of Ainim and Tipuma Formations were deposited. ‘The rifting in this age is characterized by NE-SW trending half graben system. A major block faulting occurred along the present NW Australian shelf to Irian Jaya, and sediments were supplied from uplifted block into the graben. The sedimentary environments were non-marine to transitional and {900d reservoir and high potential source rocks were deposited These formations are our primary target (Attachment |-2). 3. Jurassic age The NE-SW trending rifting event progressed, and open marine partly invaded into the area Erosion in uplifted area and deposition in graben continued, and shallow marina to restrict marine sediments of Tipuma Formation were deposited in the rifted graben. ‘Some very important reservoirs of Jurassic sandstone, named Woniwogi and Yafbie sandstone ‘were deposited in Bintuni Area. These sandstones are excellent reservoir, and they are thought to be a main path of the hydrocarbon migration in Bintuni area. But the distribution of these sandstones are limited in Bintuni-Berau Area, and they are missing due toan erosion or non-deposition in the main onshore area of the Bird Head, probably including the Semirak Block (Attachment!-3). 4. Cretaceous age Gondwana Land was completely broken up into two continents, one was Indian the other was Australian continent, and oceanic crust appeared between the two continents, The continental margin of Australian Continent was clearly created as a passive margin. ‘Sedimentary basins at the margin of the Australian continent were widen and deepen, and deep marine Cretaceous sediments accumulated (Attachment I-4). The Cretaceous deep marine carbonate and mudstone in Irian Jaya have poor potential as reservoir rocks. big unconformity is observed in this age, but the origin of the unconformity has not been well documented sotar. 5, Paleogene age ‘Shallow to deep marine carbonates was deposited on the stable Australian continental margin. Local tectonic movements, however, occurred in Bintuni area, and horst-graben system appeared in Eocene age. Clastics of the Waripi Formation was supplied into basin, and shallow marine sandstone was deposited on the horst and in nearshore area while turbidite was supplied to outer neritic to upper bathyal grabens. This is our secondary target (Attachment I) The Waripi Formation was overlain by thick carbonate sediments of Faumai, During the worldwide sea level drop in the middle Oligocene, clastic of the Sirga Formation accumulated. This event was followed by the thick deposition of the carbonate rocks of the Sago and Kais formations. 6. Miocene to Recent In Late Miocene age, northward drifting Australian continent collide against the Island Arcin ‘Southeast Asia, and collision tectonic movement occurred in iran Jaya. This collision caused an uplift and subsidence, and huge amount of sediments were supplied into basin. As a result of that, the deposition of carbonate was terminated. Lateral movement along the Sorong Fault, thrust-up in Lengguru fold belt were significant movement of this Neogene Orogeny. Also uplift and subsidence occurred in Bird Head and thick Neogene clastic sediments were deposited in Bintuni, Berau and Salawati basins. And Sekak and Misool- Onin Ridge clearly formed. (Attachment |-6). It should to be emphasized that these regional geological events as well as local ones are very important for the petroleum system in irian Jaya. 12 (Ma) _AGE eee) heel sae 8 rea E nl Mote) | ed Major Geological Events (NW Australia to Irian Jaya) Shallow to Deep Local Tectonic Marine Carbonates movement occurred was widely expanded }lin Irian Jaya Land into Indian and of Australian Break -Up Gondwana Northward Drifting Australian Continents }\ Continent Main Rift of Gondwana Land Early Rift of Gondwana Land L-| quewuoeny 1) NE-SW Half Graben System 2) Block Faulting 3) Erosion and Deposition Sandstone Reservoir (Ainim and Tipuma Formation) 4) Non-marine to Transitional Environments| High Potential Source Rock (Ainim and Tipuma Formation) Z-1 qwawuseny = apr aRoN Jurassic Main Rift of Gondowana Land Erosion and Deposition in Marginal Area 1) Development of NE-SW Graben System 2) Open Marine invaded in Basin 3) Erosion in uplifted area and Deposition in graben 4) Sandstone in marginal basin is an Excellent Reservoir and Hydrocarbon Path in Bintuni area (Upper Tipuma Formation, Yefbie'and Woniwogi Sand) 5) Eroded out in the main onshore area of Bird Head Roabiba-1 WOS-t Ofaweri-t__Seby Woniwogi Sandstone Las ES — "7 Saeoe (After Perkins and Livsey, 1993) €-| quewyoeny eo Cretaceous 1) Spreading Oceanic Crust between Indian and Australian Continent 2) Development of Passive Margin Basin was Widening and Deepening 3) Clastic influx at Continental Margin In irian Jaya, deep marine cabonates PI quawyoeny BINTUNI BASIN (May AGE Utho- PLEISTOCENE | seve [= @ [Ptiocene aad U Tkatsy MIOCENE [yy [KLASAL L | saco OLIGOCENE, EOCENE PALEOCENE 6 creta | U ceous [T 141 U JURASSIC | M C 19! Study on the Waripi Sandstone . Well Correlation 2. Thickness of formation wo SONAR . Paleoenvironments and sandstone deposition . Characteristics of Sandstone . Seal Rocks . Migration . Test Data . Conclusion 1. Correlation (Attachmentill-1) ‘Top Waripi Formation: Top of the Waripi Formation is usually recognized in the interval of "Middle to Early Eocene”, butitis questionable whether the "Top Waripi" in respective well represent a same datum plane or not. ‘Top Paleocene: Top Paleocene is clearly defined in many wells on the basis of foraminifera and nannotossil Bottom Paleocen Bottom of Paleocene is clearly defined in almost all well on the basis of an appearance of diagnostic Cretaceous foraminifera. 2. Thickness of Formation Upper Waripi (Early to Middle Eocene) (70 to 420min thickness) Thin Eocene sediments were deposited (or eroded out) on Tarof- Kalitamitrend, and thicker sediments were deposited to the east and to the west of the Tarof - Kalitami trend. The Ayot- Otaweri trend, where thinner sediments accumulated in Paleocene age, changed into an area of a thick accommodation in Eocene age.(Attachmentill-2a) Lower Waripi (Paleocene) (80 to 600m in thickness) ‘The Paleocene sequence of the Waripi Formation is remarkably varies in thickness which probably suggests a local tectonic movement in Bintuni area. Thinner sediments are found on NW-SE trending Ayot-Ofaweri, Tarof-Kalitami and Inanwatan-TBE trends. From the formation thickness pattern of the Paleocene Waripi, NW-SE trending tectonic movements are implied (Attachment Ill-2b). Paleontological and lithological data also indicate the NW-SE trending horst-graben system of this age as mentioned below. M4 3. Paleoenvironments and Sandstone deposition Upper Waripi_(Early to Middle Eocene) The depositional environments and sediments in this age show a simple lateral order from northeast to the southwest as follows: 1} anhydrite and carbonates of supralittoral environments A® 2) sandstone / sitstone / carbonates of shallow neritic environmentsA® 3) siltstone of middle to outer neritic environmentsA® 4) carbonates of open marine environments (Attachment I-22). This simple tateral order of the paleoenvironments indicates a gentle and monotonous topography in contrast with an accidental topography of the Paleocene age. The clastic influx was limited to the nearshore shallow marine environments between anhydrite accumulating supralittoral and carbonates accumulating open marine environments. The clastic influx to this limited area was terminated in the Late Eocene, and the entire area was covered with carbonates of Faumnai Formation. itis expected that the shallow marine sandstone of this age widely distributed in the Semirak Block. But tis thin in the northern area of the Block and thickens southward. in the southern part of he ‘Semirak Biock, 50 to 100 meters net sand is expected. Lower Waripi (Paleocene) tis inferred that horst-graben system was formed in this age as mentioned above. From paleontological and lithological data, turbidite sand was deposited in the grabens under outer neritic to upper bathyal conditions (Sebyar-1, Kalitami-1 and Gunug -1), and shallow marine sand was deposited on the horsts and nearshore proximal area. Therefore it is thought that the distribution pattern of shallow marine sand and turbidite sand in this age was strongly controlled by the topography resulted from the local tectonic movement (Attachment Ill-2b). in the Semirak Block, turbidite sand is probably missing or limited to the southernmost area of the Block. The shallow marine sand in the Semirak Block is expected to exist more extensively than the turbidite sandstone. But there some possibilty that the shallow marine sandstone grades into. carbonate rocks on the horsts and northern area of the Block. m2 4. Characteristics of sandstone (Attachment Ill-4a, 4p) Upper Waripi (Early to Middle Eocene) Core Analysis Core data obtained from Rawarra-1 and Sebyar-1 wells are available. Average porosity of the sandstone in these two wells are 13.9% and 11.5% respectively, whereas the average permeabilities are 1.4md and 0.54md. CST Core Observation Petrological study of Ayot-2 and Ofaweri-1 wells revealed that poor to very poor visible porosity of thin sections were observed under microscope. The reduction of the porosity was mainly caused by early precipitation of authigenic minerals, compaction, overgrowth of quartz late precipitation of authigenic minerals and crytalization of carbonate cements. On the other hand, reservoir quality was improved by fracturing and dissolution of feldspars. E-Log Analysis From a quick analysis of E-Log, 14.1 to 17.4 % sonic porosity were calculated in Tarof-2, Ayot-2 and Sebyar-1 wells. Sandstone in this age is not developed in Kalitami-1, Ofaweri-tand Roabiba-1, and there is no available E-log data in Poeragi-1 and Rawarra-1. FIT Data Water was recovered from the Waripi Formation of Sago-1 well (depth of 1981.5m) and permeability of 80md was recorded at this depth. Lower Waripi (Paleocene) Core Analysis ‘Available core data in Paleocene ages limited to Sebyar-1. Average porosity is around 10 % with very low permeability (less than 1md). Sandstone has porosity of around 10 % but permeability is very low. ‘A quick analysis of E-Log, especially sonic log, shows a geographical distribution of the porosities, which become smailer to the south. This is probably caused by the deeper burial depth and more distal depositional environments in the southem area. Therefore itis expected that the quality of the sandstone reservoir in this age generally become better to the northward (Attachment Ill-4b) 3 5, Seal Rocks \Waripi Formation is overlain by the carbonate rocks of the Faumai Formation. These carbonate rocks can not be seal. The possible seal rocks in the Waripi Formation are Anhydrite and mudstone. Itis inferred that the Eocene Anhydrite is widely distributed in the Semirak Block. About 27m thickness of anhydrite was penetrated in Rawarra-1 well. From data of adjacent wells. the Anhydrite is inferred to be thinner to the southward, and it has around 10m in thickness at the southern area of the Semirak Block (Attachment Ill-5). j Formation also shows a geographical change of the thickness. The mudstone thicker than 500 m is found in the easter part of the studied area, and it thins westward There is no effective seal rock in the Paleogene age in the southwestem area (Attachment Il-5). ‘The thickest seal rock in the Semirak Block is expected to exist in the southeastern part of the Block. 6. Migration Migration will be discussed tater after compiling data of source rock. 7.Test data No significant show was reported from the Waripi Formation and no test was conducted in the study area. 8.Conctusion Considering the expected thickness of the reservoir rocks and seal rocks as well as reservoir characteristics, the southeastern part of the Blocks the most preferable target for the tne Paleogene sandstone play, it some structures were formed there. The properties of the reservoir, especially permeability, is generally poor, which mainly caused by ‘compaction and carbonate cementation. Observation of thin sections under microscope suggests that improvement of the reservoir quality had been caused by fracturing and dissolution of feldspar. But there is not enough data in order to predict an area where the improvement of the reservoir quality intensively took place. 14 SOSRELATIQN /ANO PAL EOENVIBONMEENTS OF THE WARIPI FORMATION INBINTUNIAREA — Paleocne - (Eocer 131°E 132°E 1339°E Thickness and Depositional Environments of the Eocene Sandstone SEMIRAK BLOCK _ 28 >) Formation thickness 4%: Sand Ratio (Eocene) Anhydrite / Carbonate in Suprarittoral [J Snadstone / Siltstone/ Limestone in Shallow Neritic E23) Sittstone in Middle to Outer Neritic EES.
