Grade: 5th
Linguistic content: learn and/or revise selected vocabulary items from the
story; practising pronunciation of the words;
Communication tasks: Ss work in pairs to active their background
knowledge
Learning strategies: activating background knowledge

Procedure

Preparation
outlining goals for todays lesson
asking Ss whether they use any background knowledge before reading
a book, an article etc.
Presentation
presenting and discussing the strategy; making connections to the
discussion during preparation stage;
presenting and practising selected vocabulary items from the story;
Practice
showing the book and asking Ss to use the strategy (pair work);
gathering ideas from the previous task (mind map What do we know
about squirrels?)
working on the story (Ss listen to the story and physically react to
certain words/phrases);
while reading Ss are asked questions about illustrations as well as
clarification questions
after reading the story Ss are asked comprehension questions;
Evaluation
relating strategy from the story to the one Ss used before reading;
discussing whether the strategy was helpful and effective;
Expansion
Ss are asked to try to use the strategy of activating background
knowledge outside the classroom in a suitable situations and report the
results in two weeks time

Materials:
The book Maxs story, illustrations, a board.
