INT. LIBRARY - DAY

BECCA SANCHEZ, 10, long curly brown hair and blue eyes sits
at a table. Various fantasy books are sprawled on the table.
Her legs swing from the chair, Becca is reading, surrounded
by rows of books and tables as light pierces the great
windows of the New York Public Library.

MONTAGE

Becca’s PARENTS would bring her here every Saturday. MARIA

SANCHEZ, 39, and MICHAEL SANCHEZ, 40, loved reading. The
family would play hide-n-seek amongst the book rows for more
fun.

END MONTAGE

That time seems faraway now since the accident. EDITH LAGUNA,
38, Professor of Literature at Columbia, took Becca in after
the accident. She knew bringing Becca here might be helpful.

EDITH
Becca, sweetheart, would you like
to come with me while I go look for
some poetry?

BECCA
No, I’ll stay here.

EDITH
There’s a children’s group
downstairs today. Maybe you can
meet some new kids?

BECCA
No. I don’t want to.

EDITH
Making new friends isn’t so scary.
You’d be surprised that making
friends can help how you feel.

BECCA
I said no, thanks.

EDITH
Okay, but please stay here until I
get back.

BECCA
Okay.
2.

Edith’s shoes CLICK on the marble floors as she heads towards

the elevator.

Becca turns her nose back to her book. She is engulfed until
she hears a GIGGLE.

Becca pops her head around to see who is LAUGHING, but sees
no one. Again, she hears a GIGGLE, but this time she sees a
GIRL, about the same age, long, curly blonde hair, by the top
rows.

Becca places her book on the table and strolls nervously

towards the girl. She follows the girl, hiding when the girl
twirls, hoping not to be seen.

PIP
Hello there?

BECCA
You can see me?

PIP
Yes, want to dance with me?

BECCA
No, there’s no music.

PIP
Name’s Pip and you can dance to the
music in your head.

BECCA
I’m Becca and there is no music in
my head. You’re weird.

PIP
Then, do you want to see something
neat?

BECCA
Like what?

PIP
Come on, I’ll show you.

BECCA
I can’t.

PIP
Yes you can, Becca. Come on,
scaredy cat.

BECCA
I’m not a scaredy cat.
3.

PIP
Then come on.

The girls walk towards the end of a row hidden from the other
PATRONS. On the floor is a book.

BECCA
Now what?

PIP
Open it.

BECCA
Why?

PIP
Just open it.

Becca opens the book and a burst of light appears.

BECCA
What is that?

PIP
Come on, jump in.

BECCA
You can’t--

PIP
Yes, you can!

BECCA
Shh! No, you can’t.

PIP
Just watch. Like this--

Pip jumps into the book and disappears. Becca GASPS in

disbelief and looks around.

BECCA
How-- What-- Fine, I can do this.

Becca is blinded by light. She rubs her eyes and opens them.

OUTDOOR FIELD - DAY

BECCA
Where are we?

PIP
This is Kin.
4.

BECCA
Kin? Where is that?

PIP
My world.

BECCA
What does that mean?

PIP
Kin is another world and the book
took us here.

BECCA
That’s not possible.

The sky is gloomy. The smell of the grass is captivating.

Flowers and trees span the horizon.

BECCA (CONT’D)
What time is it here?

PIP
It’s morning.

BECCA
Is it going to rain?

PIP
No, it’s like that here now. Ever
since ...

BECCA
Ever since?

PIP
Ever since SHADOW came to the
forest.

BECCA
Who or what is Shadow?

PIP
Shadow is the girl who lives in the
forest.

BECCA
Why does she live in the forest?

PIP
I don’t know. She won’t talk to
anyone. She doesn’t let any of us
in the forest. Can you go talk to
her?
5.

BECCA
Why me?

PIP
Well, you look sad like Shadow.
Maybe she will let you talk to her
since you look sad too.

BECCA
I don’t know.

PIP
Please, Becca. She won’t talk to
anyone here in Kin, but maybe
she’ll talk to you.

BECCA
How do you know?

PIP
How will it hurt to take a chance?

BECCA
Well, she could hurt me if she gets
mad or even kill me!

PIP
No, no, that won’t happen.

BECCA
How do you know?

PIP
Please, Becca?

BECCA
Fine, but it won’t help. She
probably wants no one to bother
her.

PIP
Becca, please.

BECCA
Okay, Pip, I’ll go.

DARK FOREST - MOMENTS LATER

Becca follows Pip towards the forest’s edge. Pip points to

the path Becca is to follow. Becca turns to look at Pip and
heads down the path. The further she walks, the darker it
gets. Trees stretch to the sky shielding the light, frogs
CROAK on the lily pads on the pond. Becca HUMS to herself.
6.

BECCA (V.O.)
This is not so scarey. Who is she
calling a scaredy cat?

Becca spies an opening. Sitting on a tree log is SHADOW, long

white, curly hair and icy blue eyes. Shadow’s eyes pierce
Becca as she approaches.

SHADOW
Go away!

BECCA
Are you Shadow?

SHADOW
Who’s asking? I’ve never seen you
before.

BECCA
I’m Becca. Are you Shadow?

SHADOW
How do you know my name?

BECCA
Pip told me your name.

SHADOW
Go away; I don’t want anyone here.

BECCA
I can see that, but can we talk for
a minute?

SHADOW
Why?

BECCA
Pip seems to think you’re sad like
me and wants me to talk to you.

SHADOW
Pip can mind her own business.

BECCA
I understand how you feel.

SHADOW
How would you know?

BECCA
The lady I live with, Edith, tries
to talk to me all the time.
7.

BECCA (CONT'D)
She even wants me to make
“friends.” I don’t need them.

SHADOW
I don’t need anyone either.

BECCA
May I ask why for you?

SHADOW
My parents are dead. Happy now? Go
tell everyone, go, run!

BECCA
Why would I do that? My parents are
dead too.

SHADOW
Really?

BECCA
Yes, in an accident.

SHADOW
Mine were traveling and their boat
capsized.

BECCA
I’m sorry your parents died.

SHADOW
Thanks. Sorry for you too.

BECCA
Thank you. May I sit down?

SHADOW
If you want; I don’t care.

Becca slowly moves towards Shadow and sits on the log. The
air is crisp.

BECCA
Would you like to talk about it?

SHADOW
I’m mad at them. They left me here
all alone. How could they do that?

BECCA
They didn’t mean to, Shadow. I was
mad at my mom and dad too. I know
they would come home if they could.
8.

SHADOW
I want to see them again.

BECCA
I want to see my parents too. Edith
told me that I will see them again
one day. Maybe you will see your’s
too.

SHADOW
Do you believe that?

BECCA
I thought no one knew how I felt
until I met you. Now I know I’m not
alone. You don’t have to be either,
Shadow.

SHADOW
I don’t?

BECCA
No, I will be your friend. We can
help each other so we don’t feel so
alone.

SHADOW
My friend? Really? Why?

BECCA
Maybe it’s because we could both
use a friend who knows how we feel.

SHADOW
That does make me feel a little
better, not being alone.

Becca leans towards Shadow with open arms and embraces her.

Shadow nervously enfolds Becca, closing her eyes, and a small

smile envelopes her face. A tear escapes from her eyes.

A great light emerges between Becca and Shadow. It blinds the

forest.

FIELD - MID-AFTERNOON

Becca and Shadow recover their sight to see the open field
bathed in sunlight. Pip runs over.

PIP
You did it! Becca, you did it!
9.

BECCA
I did what? What did I do?

PIP
You saved Kin from the darkness!

SHADOW
By opening your heart to me, you
saved our land. Thank you, Becca.

BECCA
Really? I feel ...

SHADOW
Warm? Not heavy anymore?

BECCA
How did you guess?

SHADOW
Becca, look.

Becca looks at Shadow and Pip and sees herself. Each girl
smiles at each other.

EDITH (O.S.)
Becca? Becca, sweetheart.

GIRL’S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Becca struggles to open her eyes and focuses on Edith sitting

beside her on the bed.

EDITH
Becca, are you okay?

BECCA
How did I get here? Where are Pip
and Shadow?

EDITH
Who?

BECCA
My friends; I was just with them in
Kin.

EDITH
Becca, you were dreaming.
10.

BECCA
We were in the library and then we
went to Kin through the book. I
saved Kin --

EDITH
Okay, okay, okay. Relax. You’re
home now in your room. You said you
made friends?

BECCA
Shadow lost her parents too. We
knew we’re not alone. I told her
what you said.

EDITH
What I said?

BECCA
About seeing mom and dad again.

EDITH
And?

BECCA
Shadow felt better and when we
hugged this huge light ...

EDITH
You did a good thing for Shadow,
Becca.

BECCA
I did?

EDITH
Yes, you did.

BECCA
Can we go back to the library to
the children’s group?

EDITH
Of course, we can.
