CLINICAL FEATURES OF DISTRESS

Either immediately or within several hours of birth

With a combination of
o Tachypnea
o Nasal flaring
o Subcostal and intercostal retractions
o Cyanosis
o Expiratory grunt

Apneic episodes at this early stage

o Ominous but may reflect thermal instability
