ESSENTIAL i Foreword My work 0s a musician does not only consist of giving concers; | enjoy just as much teaching students ofall evel, from beginners to graduates. Over and over again, I've noticed tha! the literature for saxophone can actually be divided into two groups: on the one hand there is ¢ large omount of music for real beginners; on the other hand, we have « huge repertoire for students who major in saxophone and spend many hours every day on perfecting theit Jechnique, Between these two levels, however, there is a big gop in the reperoire. Usually, cfter approximately four or five years of learning, students reach the point where they want {0 move on from the instrumental method they are using to ‘real” saxophone pieces, But in Practice, this step offen turns out to be foo greal. The works available are sill oo dificub, and to play them anyway would imply having them on the music stand for months, which is surely not very motivating, This insight gave me the ideo to compile « number of books with varied, but nottoo-dificut ieces that are all writen in the typical saxophone sound idiom. In close cooperation with 1 composers at De Haske Publications, this collection of twelve newly composed pieces ih piano accompaniment was one of several books developed. The others are already ‘available: Encore Pieces (1389-06-400 DH) and Recital Album (DHP 104366 1-400). On the CD, you will hear me play the pieces fist. This will provide one interpretation for you, You do not have to play them exacly the way | do. You wil then have the opportunity to play along with the grand picno yourself. With this recording on a Yomaha DS6APRO grand piano, you will always have your own piano accompaniment at hand when you're studying ot home. However, it will be most instructive to play the music together with a ive piarist. You will especiolly enjoy the interaction that can develop between you and your ‘accompanist ae RA Nobuya Sugawa Born in Saga Prefecture, Japan, in 1961, Nobuya Sugawa studied with Yuichi Omuro at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. In addition to playing the classical saxophone, he has successully drawn nationwide attention fo the instrument, which was litle recognised inthe field of classical music. For this, he is greatly admired by many young Japanese saxophonists. He is highly acknowledged in Jopan as well as in Europe ard the USA for his sophisticated and bilan! tone, virtuoso technique, and refined musically. Nobuya Sugawa makes about 100 recital and concert appearances @ year and hes recorded more than 25 CDs. His concert appearances have extended fo the United States of America, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, Austria, China, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, ‘and Singapore. He is @ lecturer in saxophone at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. In 1995 he was invited to hold master classes at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. He has also given master classes at music colleges throughout Jopan, Europe, and the United States. ‘A remarkable fact about Nobuya Sugawa is his wide range of repertoire. He not only plays the big Saxophone Concertos like Ibert, Yoshimatsu, Debussy, and Glazunov with huge success, but he also plays @ more popuiar repertoire. Sugawa delights in surprising and impressing his audience with his wonderful one and interpretation.
