The Issue of Poverty in India

- Poverty is the state of being extremely poor.

- 28.5% of India lives below the poverty line.

- Indias current population is around 1.25 billion people and 70 percent live
in rural India.

- A large chunk of people in rural India live in deep poverty and most of
them are victims of inadequate nutrition.
Causes of Poverty

- One of the major causes of poverty in India is high population growth in India.

- Lack of access to financial resources.

- Do to the lack of growth in Indias economy there is a shortage of jobs so that is another reason for
poverty.

- 50% of Indians dont have proper shelter.

- 35% percent of households dont have a nearby water source.

- 85% of villages dont have a secondary school.

- Over 40% of these same villages dont have proper roads connecting them.
Effects of Poverty

- Child in poverty are more likely to to learn about poor health behaviors and are
more susceptible to mental illness as they grow older.

-Only 14 percent of the variation in a childs performance can be attributed to


school quality, according to Donald Hirsch, advisor to the Joseph Rowntree
Foundation.

- Poverty had a significant and direct effect on young peoples likelihood to engage
in violence at age 15.
Solution to Poverty

1. Enhance economic growth with targeted action


2. End all forms of poverty
3. Commit national governments to end extreme poverty
4. Develop national poverty reduction plans
5. Access to credit
6. Continue to support the poorest people through aid
7. Equal education
8. Access to health care
