Romes Citizenship

What is citizenship? Citizenship is a status or standing, given by a government to some or

all of its people. Being a citizen meant not only meeting certain responsibilities but also

enjoying certain rights. Before there were any citizens, in places like Egypt, Babylonia and

ancient China, individuals were regarded as subjects, not as citizens. Rome had different rights

for different types of citizens. Rome had a better citizenship than Athens because more citizens

participated, they were organized and Rome included people they conquered.

The cause of more participation in Rome was because Rome allowed males, females and

children as citizens unlike Athens only allowing free, native-born adult males. Romes citizens

participated more in different kinds of events. Since Romes population was more than Athens it

was a bigger advantage for Rome to get more people to their city-state and gatherings. In

addition to that, when they had events or get togethers their organization were well prepared.

Romes assemblys were well organized rather than Athens. If your gatherings arent

organized and are done last minute more than likely it will fail. Athens assemblys were always

crowded, loud, unorganized and outside which made them look less efficient. On the other hand

you can conclude that Romes gatherings were not crowded, not loud, were organized and inside

which made Rome one step closer to having a better system than Athens.
Rome also included people they conquered to be a citizen. They granted citizenship to

loyal subjects, also allowing religious and political freedom to their people. Meanwhile

Athenians were being greedy with their citizenship while Romans compromised with each other

and gave their citizenship away freely. Rome enjoyed receiving new people as citizens. Its the

reason why their population has grown.

Rome had a better system of citizenship than Athens because more citizens participated,

they were more organized and Rome included people they conquered. Their differences were

well stated to determine the fact that Rome had a better system of citizenship than Athens.
