ABSTRACT

Nowadays, people are suffering from rice pest eating their crops, especially those farmers.
Those pests are bringing poverty to them because they cause the gradual exhaustion of crops
which in turns the cause of slowdown of sales.

The study entitled Oregano (Origanum vulgare): An Alternative Pest Control aims to test
the effectiveness of Oregano as a substitute pest control that is not harmful and to prove that
using this pest controller can help in developing the beneficial effects of the rice fields. The
students makes use of oregano plant for it contains carvacrol and thymol that has the possibility
to lessen the population of the pests in the rice fields. The oregano leaves were crushed by the
blender, the extract was mixed with other components. 300 mL of the mixture was used in three
(3) sets: 50 ml, 100 ml, and 150 ml. There are three (3) pests of the same specie being tested in
the three (3) sets. Then the three (3) sets were observed: Set A for twenty (20) mins, Set B for
forty (40) mins and Set C for sixty (60) mins. The results were recorded after the observation.
Result showed that there is no relationship between the time interval (20-40-60 mins) and the
three (3) sets (50-100-150 mL) and the result concludes that this can get rid of the pests
depending at the time interval, not the amount of the mixture being used. This also means that
the time is independent of the three (3) sets.

INTRODUCTION

On a global basis sufficient food is produced to adequately feed everyone. Yet, the
pains of hunger continue to be a common experience of many people in the world
today. Food shortages in developing countries are aggravated by rapid population
growth.

Nowadays, pests are common to the rice fields. They have been known to cause
damages. They reduce fields substantially. Farmers have used various instruments to
control the pests problems in rice fields. The most popular is the commonly used
insecticide/ pesticide sprays. Most of these can destroy pests but they can also do
serious damage to the rice and humans as well. In addition to the side effects of these
materials, the costs of these insecticides /pesticides are high. All these set aside, the
question on everyones mind is: What can be an effective and natural insecticide? Is it
expensive or affordable?

Thus, the researcher conducted the study Oregano (Origanum vulgare): An Alternative
Pest Control to find out if oregano (Origanum vulgare) could be utilize to control pests
which became a serious problem for farmers.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to test the effectiveness of oregano (Origanumvulgare) against the
pests that attacks rice fields.

Specifically, the study aimed to answer the following questions:

Is it potential to control pests using Oregano (Origanum vulgare)?

What are the compound/s present in Oregano (Origanum vulgare) that could be
utilize to control the pests?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0: There is no significant effect of Oregano (Origanum vulgare) to the golden apple
snails.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is significant in a way that it can help to manage and avoid the
harassment of pest in rice fields that our society is facing nowadays. This study will be
beneficial to the farmers and society in controlling the pests crisis which damages the
production of rice. This study aims to determine the possible effects of oregano
(Origanum vulgare) to the pests and how it assists to lessen the pests that bothers the
rice fields.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study keeps within the limit on the effect of Oregano (Origanum vulgare) if it
can control pest. This study focuses only on the Oregano (Origanum vulgare) and not
on the other herbal plants.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

A. Gathering of materials
300 ml of oregano leaves were collected. Other materials that were used are beaker,
small funnel, reagent bottle, blender, cloth, stirring rod and small bowl.

B. Preparation of the Materials

First, Oregano Leaves will be gathered for the experiment. Second, the leaves and oil was
blended together. Third, it was added and mixed with water and regular dish soap. And
was tested/applied to the pests.

C. Preparation of Experimental Variables

For the materials, 500 grams of oregano leaves was used. There are 3 sets: Set A,
B and C. In Set A theres 50 mL of oregano extract, in Set B theres 100 mL and in Set C
150 mL was added. Three trials was conducted, each trial was timed: 1 st was 20 mins,
2nd was 40 mins and 3rd was 60 mins. There are three (3) pests being tested in the 3
sets.

CHAPTER 4
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

This study will use the Chi-Square Test of Independence to analyze and interpret
the result. The researchers will use this statistical tool because they will look for the
relationship between two variables (if the time span were related to the sets they
performed). Each of the variables consists of two or more levels and the level of
measurement is nominal.

PRESENTATION AND INTERPRETATION

Chi-Square Test of Independence:

Actual Range

Expected Range
formula: Row Total x Column Total / Grand Total

Degree of Freedom:
df = (C-1) (R-1)
= (3-1) (3-1)
=4

The obtained x value of 0.998 is less than 9.49 which is the critical value at the .
05 level of probability using 4 degrees of freedom. The null hypothesis of no relationship
between the time of 20-40-60 minutes and the 3 sets of 100-200-300 mL is accepted.
This also means that the time is independent of the 3 sets.

CHAPTER 5
RESULTS & DISCUSSION

Population of Pests left in every set-up

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Pesticide Total
Time Set A Set B Set C
interval (50 mL) (100 mL) (150 mL)

20 mins. 2 3 3 8
40 mins. 2 2 2 6
60 mins. 1 1 1 3
Total 5 6 6 17
As shown from data above, the population of the pestss left i every setup varies
significantly in the time interval that was used during the experimentation which is the
20-40-60 mins. and the 3 sets of 50-100-150 ml of Oregano Pesticide. And based from
the gathered data, it can be observed that as the time duration of the treatment for
every set-up is taken for a longer time, the more effective it is and operative for the said
pests.

CONCLUSION

Based on the result, it concluded that there is no relationship between the time span
and the amount of the Oregano (Oreganum vulgare) Pesticide being used that can
eliminate pests depending on its time interval. The longer the time span the higher the
population of the pests will be eliminated.

RECOMMENDATION

For the experiment to be successful, it is highly recommended that the time span
should be extended in eliminating the pests.
