NWM are manufacturers of intaniry weapons and all types oF ammunition up eo, and including, 40 mm, specialising particularly in break-up ammunition for training and trials. 2. The firm is currently considering the Post-70 Scidier and fis requirements. They beliewe that the following weapons and ammunition, which aro marketed or manufactured by NWM, offer 8 significant contribution te the manner in which the infantryman of the next decade will be armed . Stoner BIAI Weapons System, caliber 556 mm, consisting of an assault rifle XM22 and a belt fed machine gun XM 07 b. Various types of $.58 mm ammunition ¢. Technical dotails of these Homs are given in pamphtots and brochures attached to this summary. THE CONCEPT 4. The concest which led to the selection of these items is based upan the principies af: 4, Ineroasod fire powor for the infantryman ®. The highest egeee of accuracy in cetivering this fire power ¢, Lightening the combat ioad of the soldier d. Freeing the soldier, a3 far a possible, fram depondence upon other supporting ‘weapons. 5. The infantryman of today is generally arned with weapons which will deliver a 7.62 men bullet 2,090 meters wilh sulticient regidual anergy 10 Kill, Few riflemen, nowown, have the Skill to acquire and hit a target at that range. Hence the recent trend to move towards a lighter caliber as exampled by the massive switch to 5.56 mm weapons by the United States Forces in Vietnam and elsewhere. The communist “bloc” countries too, whathar Soviet or Chinese orientated. all carry the AKA? assnutt rife which, firing a 7.6% mm intermediate round, enables the rifleman to produce accurate, automatic fire in short bursts when required, This can also be achiaved by the Stoner G3A1 assault rifle-XM22-bul not by heavior weapons firing the 7.62 mim full powered round. Range of Engagement, 5.56 me weapons have boon criticised for Inck of rango, The number of occasions, however, during World War ll, Korea or Vietnam, whon a sifioman has been asked to engage a target at more than 400 meters have been wery fow indoad. So much $0 that performance aver that range isneally vecy unimportant. Even so the Stoner 8A1 weapons firing 6.56 mm ammunition will match all 7.62 mm or 30-06 weapons for accuracy, consistency and lathality oul to 700 meters. & Chance of a bit. It Is also true that the average soldier stands a far greater chance ofa hit with 556 men weapons than with heavier calibers. This is because they are lighter. handéor and produce far less recoil energy inte the shoulder. AMMUNITION AVAILABLE 3. The following types of 5.56 mm ammunition are available: 8. Ball M193 b. The range of 40 em rifle grenades - manufactured by Miear, the makers of the famous Energa antitank grenades - have an average weight of 200 grams (7.05 ozs} as compared ta 850 grams (1-43 lbs) far the conventional sifle grenade. They, alone amongst ritie projected grenades, can Bo fired accurately from the shoulder up to distances of 200 meters. For longer ranges (and the maximum range for the antipersonnel and anti-vehicle rounds is ‘550 meters) the ritio can be used as a light mortar. The fragmentation gronade produces Approximately 500 fragments at about 7,700 m/sec velocity and has 100 percent probability kill radius of 5 meters, The armour piercing grenade penetrates @ minimum of 125 mm 1812") of armour plate ar, for urban fighting or the anti-bunker role, 475 mm (18°) of con- ‘crete. At the sacrifice of a little range, (maximum ot the momont 310 mélera), the entire range of gronades.is now available with bullet traps, thua enabling them to be fired with Rormal ball ammunition.
