Abstract

Wepresentacaseofsurgeryina2montholdinfantoftheJehovah'sWitness(JW)faithweighing2.8kg
scheduledforleftupperlobectomybecauseofcongenitallobaremphysema.Hepresentedwith
physiologicalanaemia(haematocrit33.8%)inaccordancewithhisage.Becauseoftherelativeemergency
ofsurgery,ashorterythropoietincoursewasinstituted.Recombinanthumanerythropoietin(rHuEPO)ata
dosageof180Uxkg1xday1wasadministeredfor10dayspreoperativelyandfor4days
postoperatively.Ironwasadministeredorallyandintravenouslyovertheentireperioperativeperiod.No
sideeffectsfromeithererythropoietinorintravenouslyadministeredironwereobserved.Toour
knowledge,thisisthefirstcasepublishedofashortperioperativerHuEPOcourseinaninfant.
