United States, and like Philippe
Gudon, CEO of Matra Automobiles,
had noted the craze for well-
equipped vans. Both were convinced
that there was a market in Europe
for a fun, multifunctional family
vehicle.

In December 1982, Philippe Gudon


met Bernard Hanon, Renault tech-
nical manager Pierre Tiberghien, and
Renault product manager Christian
Martin, and showed them the Matra
P23 project. The prototype had been
proposed to Peugeot, but had been
rejected by the brand with the lion
emblem. And yet, Peugeot CEO Jean
Boillot was convinced that this type
of car represents a turning point
in terms of bodywork that is as
important as Diesel was in terms of
mechanics. Some will take to it,

It pushed the idea of hatchback
sedans to its limit by turning the

that could take up to 7 passengers.
The Espace had not traded in any of
its performance for comfort.
Motorists hailed its qualities in terms
of safety but also its power, breaking
ability, and grip on the road.
