Night Essay
Many people believe that the Holocaust was one of the most inhuman act in history. In the

book Night by Elie Wiesel. Mr.Wiesel is one of the few who survived the concentration camp

and lived to tell his journey in Auschwitz. He believes that we shouldn't forget the dead and what

happened in Auschwitz so history won't repeat itself. I agree with Mr.Wiesels beliefs because

it's very important that this tragedy will never happen again.Ellie's character changes throughout

the book because what he does and witnesses in Sighet, Auschwitz and Buna, and finally the

Death march and Buchenwald.

First young Elie was 14 almost 15 when he lived in Sighet before Auschwitz he was a

religious, healthy, and caring boy. I was almost thirteen and deeply observent. By day I studied

Talmud and by night I would run to the Synagogue to weep over the destruction of the Temple

(Wiesel 3). This quote shows how he was it devoted to his studies and how innocent he was.

Another example is when Wiesel states I would often sit with him in the evening after the

service, listening to his stories and trying my hardest to understand his grief. I felt only pity for

him (5). This quote proves that Elie cared about other people other than his family and his

religion. These examples show that in Sighet younger Elie was a religious, healthy, and caring

boy.

Secondly Elie arrived in Auschwitz and Buna he was immediately separated from his mom

and sister, saw innocent people die in unimaginable ways,and was told to lie about his age.

Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has it turned my life into one long

night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I

forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke the

beneath a silent blue sky. Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever.

Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live.

Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my

dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God

Himself. Never (Wiesel 32). This long quote shows that he lost his faith and most of his family

the very first night of concentration camp. Buna is another camp in Auschwitz him and his father

worked together and were forced to March and anything worth money from them. What are

you, my God, I thought angrily, compared to this afflicted crowd, proclaiming to You their Faith,

their anger, their revolt? What does Your greatness mean, Lord of the universe, in the face of all

this weakness, this decomposition,and this decay? Why do You still trouble their sick minds,

their crippled bodies? (Wiesel 65). This example shows that Elie is questioning God which he's

never done before he went to the camp. Lastly these quotes show that not only did the camp kill

his faith but also killed most of his family.

Thirdly Elie went on the death march and in Buchenwald. The death march was a run in

freezing cold temperatures and for hours of miles without food or water and if you collapsed you

got shot. Wiesel says to himself Don't think. Don't stop. Run. Near me, men were collapsing in

the dirty snow. Shots(81). This show how harsh the run was and why it was called the death

march. Buchenwald was another camp where his dad died and were Elie no longer cared And I

had but one desire to eat. I no longer thought of my father or of my mother. From time to time I

would dream of a drop of soup, of an extra ration of soup(Wiesel 107). This quote explains that

Elie lost everything so had no other care in the world except for eating.These last two quotes

show that since the he lost everything he can finally care and worry about himself.

In conclusion Elie Wiesel started as a religious, healthy, and caring boy but in the end lost

everything he had before. We both believe that his along with other people who died in these
tragic ways deserves to be remembered and for this story to live out and forever be a lesson to

future generations to make sure nothing like this happens again.
