INTRODUCTION

Belt is an important component in design of belt conveyor, because -

1. It is the main component of belt conveyor which actually conveys material.

2. Belt is in direct contact with the material so it is always subjected to impact, abrasion,
attrition etc.

3. Belt is one of the costliest item which affects the capital investment.

4. Improper design of belt may result into fast wear and tear of the belt, resulting into high
running cost.

The conveyor belt primarily consists of carcass and rubber covers.

Top cover thickness = t1

Carcass thickness = t2

Bottom cover thickness = t3

Total belt thickness t4 = t1+t2+t3

CARCASS : FUNCTIONS AND TYPES

Carcass provides basic strength to take care of all the forces generated in belt during the
course of conveyor operation. It provides longitudinal and transverse stiffness to belt for
supporting the material, as the belt moves on the idlers.

Carcass withstands following forces :

1. Main tension along the length of belt,

2. Weight of the material,

3. Impact at the feeding point.

Two types of carcass -

1. Textile fabric carcass

2. Steel cord carcass
