Originally the plan was to ship the seals to Slough and carry out all the modifications, pressure test them. {and ship them to site. Unfortunately the first pair of seals, off the ‘A’ pump, were held up in the customs at Algiers so the decision was taken to hand carry all the parts to site and build the seals there using the seals from the ‘B’ pump. These were removed and examined. A quaniity of sand was found in both pump stuffing boxes when the seals were removed, The DE seal had been run for aparoximately ten ‘minutes whilst the NDE had not run at all and as such was in good condition. The primary DE seal faces were in good condition and showed no signs of distress. The DE secondary Mating Ring (ref_20) had a piece missing from the edge between its bore and running face. A few small cracks emanated from this chip and these showed signs of ‘overheating as they were higher than the surrounding area, In the writers opinion the damage to the ring looked mechanical as the remainder of the face was in goad condition. ‘The only major problem encountered during the build was that the two M12 jacking bolt holes through the two new inner Giand Plates (ref.25) had been drilled and tapped midway between the M24 stud bolt holes, This meant that they did not line up with the two 14mm diameter clearance holes in the Outer Gland Plate (ref.26) as these are offset from the midway position by 5%. This was overcome by lapping the 44mm clearance holes out to M16. | removed six of the twelve Springs (ref. 19) from the secondary seal to reduce the heat generated by this seal. The seal arrangement drawings have been modified and a letter explaining this action has been received by Ebara and site personnel Using the test cell and pipe-work, which was hand carried to site, both seal cartridges were successfully pressure lested with air to 1,8 barg for a five minute duration after which they were installed on the pump. The Plan 17 flush line had been modified to include two pressure gauges, which are fitted between the two 4.7mm orifice plates on each end of the pump. The Plan 11 take off point o JOHN CRANE UK LTD
