Summer Book List

For Fifth Grade

A. Required Reading
Incoming fifth grade students are required to read during the summer months. One book is
mandatory, but I encourage children to read as much as they possibly can. Once students have
read one book from the list below, they are to choose two of the book report options and turn
these in on the first day of school.

Choose from the following books:

Hatchet, Paulsen Esperanza Rising, Munoz-Ryan

Old Yeller, Gipson On My Honor, Bauer
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dahl Storm Warriors, Carbone
Charlottes Web, White Ballet Shoes, Streatfeild
The Courage of Sarah Noble, Dalgliesh I Am Regina, Keehn
When Freedom Comes, Gregory Guns for General Washington, Reit

reviews.

3. Chose two characters from the story and write a conversation they might have.

4. Make a list of new, unusual, or interesting words or phrases found in your book.

5. Describe in detail three characters from the story. List reasons why you would or wouldn't want
to get to know these people.

6. Create a poster about the books characters and events of the story.

7. Prepare a diorama about the books setting and characters.

***Please note that books may be purchased, either in hard or soft cover, or in electronic form.
Please check Bookmans for gently used books. And dont forget the public library!
