Hatchet Summary

In the first 50 pages of the book, it basically sets up the entire story. Brian the main

character is going to his fathers house whom lives in Canada. Brian has both internal and

external conflict throughout this story due to his parents being divorced, and him having to

survive the Canadian wilderness later on in the novel. In order to get to his fathers home, Brian

has to travel in a small plane with two seats. While flying the pilot lets Brian steer the plane, just

to show him that it is really not difficult. After a while of flying they pass into the Canadian

border, and the pilot is noticeably struggling. Brian notices and asks what is going on, the pilot

however, does not respond. Brian becomes panicked after he finds the pilot has had a heart attack

and is now dead. Brian gets on the mic and calls mayday to base, but he has no response. This

leaves him alone flying a plane in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, and with the question:

How will he crash land this plane? He tries to steer the plane but ends up crash landing into a

lake surrounded by tall pine trees. Brian barely makes it out of the plane and lake alive, and

passes out when he reaches land. The next day starts his survival adventure when he discovers

how hungry and thirsty he is.
