1a) Briefly identify the main point expressed by the artist of the political cartoon.
The main point of the political cartoon is to show Calvin Coolidges approach towards big
business. Coolidge took a hands off approach which meant that the government would not
interfere with any of the dealings made by businesses. It also shows how he supported business,
allowing their pockets to fill.
1b) Briefly explain ONE policy example from the 1920s that supports that point of view.
One policy that shows this is the Fordney-McCumber Tariff Law. This law raised the tariff from
the average of 27% to an average of 38.5%.
1c) Briefly explain ONE impact of the policy you described in Part B.
One impact of this law is the raising of tariffs throughout Europe. This ended up hurting big
business more than it did to help them. This is because of all of the countries that imposed higher
tariffs as a result of this were the same countries that the businesses exported to.
