representative of the continuation of the 19th century symphonic


tradition in the early 20th century. I have considered elements such as
form, orchestration, harmonic idiom and early 20th century critical
opinion.

Elgars first symphony is an example of continuation of the 19th century


symphonic tradition, in its form, standard orchestration and critical
acclaim. Reviews from the 1908 premiere liken the symphony to
