TIME-THREE HOURS
MAXIMUM MARKS-50

1. (a) Explain the clapeyrons theorem of three moments.

(b) What do you understand by sinking and rotation of supports?
(c)What is the effect of sinking and rotation of supports on fixed end moments in a fixed beam?
(d) Analyze the fixed beam shown in figure-1
(e) Analyze the beam shown in figure -2 by three moment theorem.

2. (a)What do you mean by carry over factor in moment distribution method? Explain.

(b)Define (i) Absolute stiffness (ii) Modified stiffness

(c)Define distribution factor as applicable in moment distribution method.

(d)Analyze the beam shown in figure-3 by moment distribution method. EI is constant.

(e)Analyze the beam shown in figure-4 by moment distribution method.

3. (a) What do you understand by pin jointed and rigid jointed structures?

(b) Explain the determinate and indeterminate structure.

(c) What are the advantages of indeterminate structures over determinate one?

(d)Define static degree of indeterminacy. How is it determined for pin-connected structures and rigid
connected structures?

(e)Where do you use non loading bearing walls? Enumerate different structural elements of a multi-storied
framed structures and state clearly if they are load bearing.

4.(a) Define dead load, live load and factor of safety.

(b)What are allowable stresses?

(c) What combinations of different types of loads are considered while designing residential structures?

(d)What are earthquake loads? How are those accounted in design?

(e) In what type of structures soil and hydrostatic forces need to be considered. How are these accounted in
design?
5.(a) Write down the uses of retaining walls.

(b) Discuss in brief the purpose of shear key.

(c) How is base pressure calculated for retaining wall?

(d) Enumerate different parts of cantilever type retaining wall? How are these parts viewed from structural
action viewpoint (whether simply supported or other type)?

(e)Discuss in brief the preliminary proportioning of retaining walls. How the stability analysis is carried
out for a counterfeit retaining wall?
